NW Briefs: Harshman appears out as PLU's coach

Dave Harshman appears out as men's basketball coach at Pacific Lutheran after four seasons.

"I'm not at liberty to comment because it's a personnel matter," said David Girrard, PLU's sports-information director.

Asked if PLU will have an announcement today, Girrard replied, "possibly."

Another official in the PLU athletic department in a position to know would neither confirm nor deny that Harshman had been fired.

PLU just completed a 5-20 season, and Harshman's record at the school is 26-74.

Harshman's father, Marv, starred at PLU then later coached there from 1945-58 before going on to coach at Washington State and the University of Washington.

Baseball

Washington's Matt Stevens was named Pac-10 player of the week.

Stevens, a sophomore from Lake Stevens, hit four home runs in four games and hit .500 (7 for 14) as the Huskies went 3-1. The sophomore drove in 11 runs, walked three times, scored six runs and stole a base. It's Stevens' second career player-of-the-week award.

UCLA's Hector Ambriz was named the conference's pitcher of the week.

Golf

Washington State's Anastasia Kostina and Amy Eneroth each finished in the top 10, and the Cougars women took fifth place at the Pinehurst Challenge in Pinehurst, N.C.

Kostina finished the three-day tournament with an 8-over 224, three shots behind winner Michelle Jarman of North Carolina-Wilmington. Eneroth shot a 203 to tie for 10th.

Maryland won the team title.

Notes

• The Washington State-Binghamton baseball game, part of the Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif., was postponed because of rain. The game is yet to be rescheduled, but the teams will attempt to make it up before the tournament ends Saturday. The Cougars play Lafayette today at 4.p.m.

• Seattle Pacific sophomore Robbie Will was named Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball player of the week.

SPU center Brittney Kroon won the women's award.
