New shows for the new year on HGTV and PBS

New Year's Day dawns, and the possibilities are endless. You could get out of bed, or you could recover just a couple more days. You could clean up all that confetti, or you could throw open the doors and invite the birds to claim it for their winter nests. You could stagger to the couch to watch another tired, old football game — or you could joyously bound to the den, leap on the treadmill and blare these invigorating new shows from our friends at HGTV and PBS.
"Making of the Rose Parade 2006 ," Sunday, 11 a.m., HGTV. Cameras have been tracking float builders, crews and volunteers for an entire year of parade preparation. Someone had to edit that down to one hour.
"HGTV's Dream Home 2006," Sunday, 9 p.m. Want a new home? In North Carolina? Tour this Blue Ridge Mountain beauty, which will be awarded to a viewer in the network's 10th annual sweepstakes, and see whether it'd be worth the move. (Enter at HGTV.com by Feb. 17.)
"Rose Parade 2006," Monday, 8 a.m., HGTV. Stay in your jammies and live vicariously as sunshine, flowers, floats and music fill the streets of Pasadena during the 117th Tournament of Roses Parade. We're guessing those spastic M&M balloons were not invited.
"World's Most Extreme Homes," Monday, 1 p.m., HGTV. (Normally will air Mondays at 9 p.m.) Visit a whale-shaped house in Mexico, a floating cottage in England and other extremely unconventional houses around the world. Funny, no mention of that old woman in the shoe.
"Pet Pads," Monday, 2 p.m., HGTV. This special features folks who have designed their homes around their pets. They don't mean a coordinated kitty scratching post in the living room — they're talking "making room for a pet buffalo at the breakfast table" and "hanging indoor vines for the family marmoset."
"Behind the Design of HGTV's Dream Home 2006," Monday-Friday, 8 p.m. In case you didn't get the idea that HGTV is giving away a dream home, this five-part series will take you behind the scenes to watch the creation of this stunner.
"My Parents' House," Tuesday, 11 p.m., HGTV. In this new series, grown kids will return to their parents' homes to redecorate a room. Can't you just picture Greg Brady yanking out those blasted orange counters?
"Design Inc.," Thursday, 11 p.m., HGTV. Sneak a peek into the inner workings of a busy interior-design firm and watch designer Sarah Richardson and her team create inspirational living areas. — most not involving marmoset vines.
"Real Simple," Jan. 7 (check listings for times), PBS. This new series, inspired by the magazine, offers smart solutions and inspiring ideas to make your busy life easier, from cooking to entertaining to organizing. One idea: Blow off the ironing for half an hour to watch TV.

Since we're talking about new contests and new shows and PBS, we thought we'd throw in some tidbits about "Antiques Roadshow," celebrating its 10-year anniversary in 2006:
61: The number of cities the show has visited.
750,000: The number of appraisals its appraisers have appraised.
Go back in time: Visit www.pbs.org/antiques for the top-10 appraisals and a behind-the-scenes tour of the production process.
Enter to win! For the first time, "Roadshow" will deliver its expert crew to the doorsteps of six lucky winners. You could win an appraisal in the comfort of your own home. For sweepstakes rules, visit www.pbs.org/antiques.
Who's that guy? There's a new host for the new season: Mark L. Walberg, former host of ... hmmm ... "Temptation Island."
