Miami (Ohio) sets NCAA baseball record with 35 runs

AUSTIN, Texas — Miami of Ohio set an NCAA regional record for runs and had a record-tying 33 hits in a 35-8 rout to eliminate Quinnipiac from the Austin Regional of the NCAA tournament.

The teams combined to set an NCAA regional record for total hits (50), at-bats (101), runs (43) and total bases (80). The combined seven triples also tied an NCAA single-game record.

Brandon Hillier and Brian Canada each had five hits and four runs batted in for Miami (45-17). Paul Frietch hit a two-run homer and Will Reynolds added a three-run home run.

Miami's Matt Long (1-1) pitched five innings of relief, allowing four runs on eight hits.

Ryan Rizzo and Brien McGee had three hits for Quinnipiac (26-24). Chris Wakefield (6-2) lasted two innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits.

Today Miami will face the loser of a game between Texas and Arkansas.

Florida opens with win

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Matt LaPorta drove in three runs, Bryan Ball pitched 6-2/3 solid innings and Florida opened its NCAA regional with an 8-3 victory over state rival Stetson.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed after a three-hour rain delay. The Gators (41-20) were far from sluggish in the late-morning start, scoring four times in the first three innings.

Later in the day, Notre Dame eliminated Stetson by beating the Hatters 7-4. Brett Lilley had three hits for the Fighting Irish (37-23-1).

Georgia Tech romps

ATLANTA — Blake Wood pitched a six-hitter for Georgia Tech's first complete game of the season, and the Yellow Jackets pounded out 17 hits in a 10-2 win over South Carolina.

Georgia Tech is the only unbeaten team in the double-elimination regional.
