Winter sports roundup: Ohno takes 3rd World Cup title

SPISSKA NOVA VES, Slovakia — Apolo Ohno of Seattle earned his third World Cup short-track speedskating championship and took the 1,000 meters at a competition yesterday.

Ohno won the season title with 200 points, six ahead of Canada's Mathieu Turcotte. South Korea's Hyun-soo Ahn finished third with 193 points.

Ohno, 22, also was the World Cup overall champion in 2001 and 2003. He finished third last season. Ohno's accomplishments include winning the gold medal in the 1,500 meters at the 2002 Olympics.

In yesterday's 1,000 final, Ohno prevailed in 1 minute, 32.362 seconds. Ahn was second in 1:32.901.

Ohno was the World Cup season champion in the 1,000 and 1,500. He finished second to Turcotte in the 500 rankings.

Ohno helped the U.S. team win the men's 5,000 relay in 6:46.801. The others on the relay team were Mike Kooreman of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Rusty Smith of Sunset Beach, Calif.; and Jordan Malone of Denton, Texas.

Meng Wang of China won the women's season title with 196 points.

Austrian skier Raich rules

BORMIO, Italy — Bode Miller of Franconia, N.H., first lost two gold medals, then a ski in the downhill. Yesterday, he lost his status as the premier skier at the world alpine championships.

Austrian Benjamin Raich took the honors, becoming the most decorated male skier of the championships after putting together two brilliant slalom runs on the rapidly deteriorating Stelvio course to win his second gold medal and fourth overall.

Raich also won gold in the combined, took silver in the giant slalom and got a surprise bronze in the super-giant slalom.

Leading after the first leg in the slalom, Raich posted a combined time of 1 minute, 41.34 seconds. Teammate Rainer Schoenfelder was second, 0.24 back. Giorgio Rocca of Italy was third, 0.74 behind.

Miller failed to finish the second run.

Johnson faces charges

PORTLAND — Olympic gold medalist Bill Johnson is facing assault charges after he allegedly punched a sheriff's deputy in the face during a traffic stop.

Johnson, 44, was arrested Friday after he was stopped in his pickup truck by a Multnomah County sheriff's deputy and a suburban Troutdale police officer.

When officers approached, the 1984 Olympic downhill champion pulled out his gold medal and taunted officers by saying, "You don't have one of these," police said.

Johnson was booked at the Multnomah County Detention Center on two counts of resisting arrest, two counts of assaulting an officer and one count of driving while intoxicated. His bail was set at $17,500.

• Austria won a World Cup ski-jumping team event in Pragelato, Italy.

• Kati Wilhelm of Germany won a women's 7.5-kilometer sprint at a World Cup biathlon event in San Sicario, Italy.

• Pierre Lueders of Canada won the final two-man World Cup bobsled race of the season, but Martin Annen of Switzerland captured the World Cup season title in Lake Placid, N.Y.
