Top golfers in field in U.S. Amateur tournament

Many of the Northwest's top golfers are in the field of 90 men competing today at Classic Golf Club in Spanaway in a 36-hole stroke-play qualifier for the U.S. Amateur tournament. Four will advance.

The U.S. Amateur is scheduled for Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., Aug. 16-22. The four lowest scores today will qualify.

Pepperdine's Michael Putnam, of Tacoma, and University of Washington golfer Alex Prugh, the first alternate to the U.S. Open, are expected to be contenders. Former UW golfer Derek Berg is looking for his second trip to the Amateur.

Notes

Ciaran O'Brien scored for FC United in the 18th minute, and Kelmel scored in the 77th and 78th minutes.
