Volunteers
Charlotte Romo of Camano Island has become the president of the Assistance League of Everett for the current fiscal year, and Paulette Jacobson of Everett is now the president-elect.
Jacobson will become president next year.
Other new officers are M.A. Kendall, the vice president of philanthropic projects; Judy Benson, the vice president of membership; Neena Blackwell, the recording secretary; Cleta Rupp-Lee, the corresponding secretary; and Grace Hansen, the treasurer.
The Assistance League is a volunteer organization that helps children and adults. Its Operation School Bell provides free clothing to children in 12 school districts.
Hats off
The Lake Stevens School Board recently recognized its outstanding secondary students for May:
• Lake Stevens High School: ninth-graders Trevor Wolcott and Tam To, sophomores Sean O'Banion and Alicia Gregory, juniors Kane Merrill-Curie and Sarah Froman, and seniors Robert Smith and Brenna Hesch.
• Lake Stevens Middle School: sixth-graders Hayley McGinty and Travis Zingleman, seventh-graders Melissa Vonderhofen and Bo Dickinson, and eighth-graders Stephanie Jones and Tyson Vertefeuille.
• North Lake Middle School: sixth-graders Jared Lippold and Samantha Minor, seventh-grader Nick Jones, and eighth-graders Jacob Edeen and Julia Lukens.
Mike Shay, the auditor/controller for the Snohomish County Public Utility District, has been honored with the George F. Childs Award from the Northwest Public Power Association. The award is presented to an individual in the utility and accounting/finance areas who demonstrates outstanding performance and community service.
Shay is the chairman of the board for Volunteers of America's Western Washington region. He also has volunteered as an allocation-panel member of the United Way of Snohomish County. In addition, he has served for several years as a coach, committee member and board member for youth-sports associations.
The Edmonds School District Alumni Association, a nonprofit organization of graduates, staff members and supporters, recently announced it was giving out 25 scholarships totaling $17,350 for graduating seniors. Among the scholarship recipients were:
