SEATTLE — Safeway's Seattle division is recalling half-gallon-size Lucerne Chocolate Ice Cream, saying it may contain undeclared peanuts.

The recalled Lucerne Chocolate Ice Cream was distributed to fewer than 85 Safeway stores in Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and the city of Milton- Freewater, Ore., between April 16 and April 27, the company said yesterday .

Federal Way principal probed over test suggestion

FEDERAL WAY — The principal at Saghalie Middle School is on administrative leave while the school district investigates whether he violated professional practices by suggesting that three teachers cover a topic he saw on the state science test given to eighth-graders.

Tim Mackey looked at the Washington Assessment of Student Learning before students were scheduled to take it, district spokeswoman Diane Turner said. She said he didn't reveal the test questions to the three teachers, and the teachers didn't do what he asked. The principal reported the incident to the district himself.

The investigation is expected to take about a week. The state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction already decided the test's security wasn't compromised.

Woman, 18, found dead in car may have drowned

TACOMA — Investigators say an 18-year-old woman found dead yesterday in her car in the White River in Sumner may have accidentally drowned.

Lara Reynolds showed no signs of physical violence, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office.

Her body was fully clothed when it was recovered from her car. All of her personal belongings were with her, and investigators said she was alone.

Reynolds, a high-school senior at Life Christian Academy, had been missing since Saturday after leaving a party in Parkland, Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Monroe priest on leave as allegation is investigated

SEATTLE — The Seattle Archdiocese has placed the Rev. Michael C. OBrien, pastor at St. Mary of the Valley Parish in Monroe, on administrative leave while it investigates an old allegation that the priest sexually abused a minor.

OBrien, who denies the allegation, was accused in 1993 of sexually abusing a teenage boy during a canoeing trip. The Seattle Archdiocese placed OBrien, then pastor of St. John's Catholic Church in Vancouver, Wash., on leave and reported the allegations to civil authorities.

A subsequent investigation by Mason County authorities was dropped for reasons that are unclear, said Greg Magnoni, Seattle Archdiocese spokesman. Following church policy at the time, OBrien agreed to undergo counseling and was monitored and placed on restricted ministry.

A recent investigation by the church's case-review board, an independent board charged with deciding accused priests' suitability for ministry, raised questions about whether the original investigation was adequate. The board in late May will likely make a determination on OBrien's suitability to minister.

The 1993 accusation is the only allegation of abuse against OBrien, Magnoni said.

Woman killed in accident was 55-year-old Seattleite

SEATTLE — A woman who died in a head-on collision Monday night was identified yesterday as Gloria Daquep, a 55-year-old Seattle resident.

Police said Daquep was driving north around the 9200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way when her car was struck by another car traveling south in the northbound lanes.

The 27-year-old driver of that car had been involved in another hit-and-run accident about five minutes earlier, police said.

The man was seriously injured in the second accident. He is being guarded at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He will be booked into jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide upon release, said Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb.
