Former Tacoma city manager accused of DUI

UNIVERSITY PLACE — Former Tacoma city manager Ray E. Corpuz Jr. was arrested early today for investigation of drunken driving.

He was booked into Pierce County Jail and released on $500 bail, KING Television reported.

Additional details about the arrest were not available. Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer did not immediately return a page this morning.

The Tacoma City Council fired Corpuz in the months after Police Chief David Brame killed his wife then himself.

Corpuz, who named Brame police chief in December 2001, called the divorce dispute between the Brames "a civil matter" the day Crystal Brame's allegations she had been abused by her husband became public.

The following day, April 26, 2003, David Brame shot her in the parking lot of a Gig Harbor strip mall, then turned the gun on himself.

In July the City Council fired Corpuz, who apparently declined to investigate allegations by some Tacoma officers that Brame and Assistant Police Chief Catherine Woodard had improperly used their rank to intimidate Crystal Brame.

Woodard, who has denied wrongdoing, retired in November on a tax-free, $65,000-a-year pension.

Crystal Brame's family has filed a $75 million wrongful death lawsuit against the city, contending that officials should have known Brame was dangerous. The lawsuit also names Corpuz, Woodard and Mayor Bill Baarsma as defendants.
