If commissioner Bud Selig approves the trade of Alex Rodriguez from Texas to New York, the Rangers will pay $67 million of the $179 million still owed Rodriguez the next seven years. The original contract was for 10 years, $252 million. The remaining salary will be broken down this way: | ||
Year | Yankees | Rangers |
2004 | $15 million | $3 million |
2005 | $15 million | $6 million |
2006 | $15 million | $6 million |
2007 | $16 million | $7 million |
2008 | $16 million | $8 million |
2009 | $17 million | $7 million |
2010 | $18 million | $6 million |
• The Rangers will pay $43 million of Rodriguez's salary the next seven years, plus $24 million in deferred money remaining on the contract, with the interest rate lowered from 3 percent to 1.75 percent.
• The deferred money already owed by Texas — $36 million, including salaries from 2001-03 — will be converted to an assignment bonus. The payout schedule will be pushed back to 2016-25 from 2011-20.
• In exchange for the alterations, which devalue the present-day value of the contract by $5 million, Rodriguez will receive a hotel suite on road trips, have the right to link his Web site to the Yankees' site and get a guarantee that the deferred money won't be wiped out by a work stoppage.
