WesCo roundup: Hoffman touchdown leads Shorecrest over Arlington

A dramatic ending got Shorecrest's season off to a great start.

Shane Hoffman caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jon Glancy with 1:07 left as the Scots pulled out a 25-24 nonleague high-school football victory over Arlington last night at Shoreline Stadium.

Hoffman's third touchdown of the night capped a remarkable 99-yard drive by Shorecrest, which stopped Arlington on downs on its own 1-yard line to take possession. Middle linebacker Collin Small, who finished with 10 tackles, made the critical stop.

That wasn't the only drama in the wild final minutes. The big play on the drive was a 56-yard pass from Glancy to J.D. Gardner.

Glancy finished the night 11 for 13 passing for 215 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

Hoffman ended a busy night with some eye-popping statistics. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior, who plays both running back and wide receiver, caught five passes for 95 yards and also rushed for 86 yards on 18 carries. With his return yardage, Hoffman had 245 total yards.

Hoffman had a 6-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 1-yard scoring run in the second. The latter TD put Shorecrest ahead, 13-12.

Kenny Gunter led the way on both offense and defense for Arlington's Eagles. He completed 11 of 20 passes for 144 yards, passed for one touchdown, ran for another and returned a fumble for a third. His 58-yard return put Arlington ahead 6-0 in the first quarter.

Brenton Bodewig added a pair of scores for the Eagles. He caught a 14-yard TD pass from Gunter in the first period and added a 19-yard run in the third quarter that put Arlington ahead 18-13.

Besides his defensive highlights, Small had a 16-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for Shorecrest, which is already halfway to its 2002 victory total.
