KingCo 4A team-by-team outlook:

Ballard Beavers

Location: Ballard

Coach: Doug Trainor (4th year, 13-14)

2002: 5-3 conference (5th place), 6-3 overall

Returning starters (10 offense, 8 defense): OG/DT Tyler Ashby, 6-5, 300, Sr.; WR/FS Keauntea Bankhead, 6-0, 205, Sr.; WR Eddie Behringer, 6-0, 183, Sr.; RB/LB J.T. Diederichs, 6-2, 217, Sr.; P Jordan Gardner, 6-0, 185, Jr.; K Mike Hart, 5-11, 170, Jr.; TE Aaron Leon, 6-1, 218, Sr.; OT James Magee, 6-3, 261, Sr.; LB Bobby McIntyre, 5-10, 190, Sr.; QB Cole Morgan, 6-3, 186, Sr.; OT/DE James Sabo, 6-2, 243, Sr.; FB/LB Jakob Shank, 6-1, 211, Jr.; TE Tony Thompson, 6-2, 214, Sr.; SS Jerome Williams, 6-1, 192, Jr.; DT Robert Zirk, 5-11, 266, Sr.

Other key returners: DE Justin Clark, 6-0, 205, Sr.; DE Ty Fotheringham, 6-2, 205, Jr.; DT Amman Haile-Leul, 6-0, 225, Sr.; OL Adrian Diaz, 6-5, 311, Jr.; S Keith Frost, 5-9, 158, Sr.; CB Kevin Hickenbottom, 6-3, 188, Jr.; OL Andrew O'Brien, 6-3, 240, Jr.; LB Josh Pendleton, 6-0, 200, Jr.; TE Cameron Plommer, 6-0, 190, Jr.; OL Shawn Stolsig, 6-3, 250, Jr.; OL Nick Thornton-Jack, 6-4, 290, Jr.; RB Cordarryl Woodford, 5-11, 205, Jr.; CB Riki Yoshinaga, 5-10, 165, Jr.

Impact newcomers: CB/WR Fred Hawthorne, 5-10, 180, Sr.; WR Andre Faulkner, 6-4, 173, Sr.; WR Dan Tyson, 5-10, 160, Jr.

Outlook: Beavers led conference in total offense last year (352 yds/game) and return RB Diederichs (173 carries, 1,168 yds, 10 TDs), QB Morgan (108 of 208, 1,476 yds, 21 TDs) and WR Bankhead (45 catches, 800 yds, 10 TDs). Diederichs has committed to WSU, Morgan to Montana. Huge offensive line, led by UW recruit Ashby, averages 6-4, 283. Depth, experience, senior leadership should be strengths.

Bothell Cougars

Location: Bothell

Coach: Tom Bainter (4th year, 25-7)

2002: 8-0 (KingCo 4A champs), 11-1 (lost to Capital in state quarterfinals)

Returning starters (5 offense, 3 defense): OL Jim Arment, 6-0, 220, Sr.; LB Brandon Bartlette, 5-10, 190, Sr.; TE/LB Brendan Gallacher, 6-2, 205, Sr.; WR Zach Hekker, 6-5, 205, Sr.; WR Travis McKee, 6-5, 190, Sr.; OL Steve Palmer, 6-2, 250, Sr.; S Russell Wacker, 5-9, 175, Sr.; RB Bart Ward, 5-10, 200, Sr.

Other key returners: WR/DB Nate Baker, 5-10, 180, Sr.; WR/DB Stefan Clark, 5-10, 165, Sr.; QB Tony Gardiner, 5-10, 170, Sr.; OL/DE Scott LaBrash, 6-0, 215, Sr.; RB/LB Sam Nelson, 5-10, 170, Sr.; LB Kevin Norris, 5-10, 175, Sr.; OL/DL Adam Starr, 5-11, 235, Sr.

Impact newcomers: OL/DL Kellen Gallacher, 5-10, 215, Jr.; FB/DE Nick Jones, 6-2, 190, Jr.; QB/DB Jonathon Musseau, 6-0, 175, Jr.; WR/DB Michael Pearce, 5-10, 170, Jr.; FB/DB Carl Ridlon-Moore, 5-11, 175, Jr.; FB/LB Niko Wacker, 5-11, 185, So.

Outlook: Cougars coming off best season in school history and first KingCo title. Bothell led conference in total defense (188.9 yds/game), but has new faces at every position on defensive line and three of four LB spots. S Wacker might be best defensive player. RB Ward steps in for Sean Gallacher, now playing at Western Washington, and is team's strongest pound-for-pound player. QB Gardiner played in 11 of 12 games last season and has big targets in WRs Hekker and McKee. Offensive line is an early concern.

Eastlake Wolves

Location: Sammamish

Coach: Jeff Chandler (5th year, 21-17)

2002: 5-3 (4th), 5-5 (lost to Bethel in district playoffs)

Returning starters (7 offense, 3 defense): RB Corbin Collins, 5-8, 175, Jr.; TE/DL Spencer Cornett, 6-3, 215, Sr.; TE/LB Dan Kowall, 6-2, 190, Sr.; OL/DL Danny Kress, 6-0, 250, Sr.; RB Geoff Long, 6-2, 205, Sr.; OL/DL Dominic Michaud, 6-0, 230, Jr.; OL/DL Tyler Peerenboom, 6-5, 295, Sr.; TE/DL Steve Rowe, 6-3, 205, Jr.; WR/DB Brian Thirtyacre, 5-9, 175, Sr.

Other key returners: WR/QB Alex Loomis, 6-3, 180, Sr.; LB Jordan Vinson, 6-0, 200, Sr.; DL Keith Wilkins, 5-11, 175, Sr.

Impact newcomers: RB Bryce Andrews, 5-10, 160, Jr.; OL/DL Geoff Fisher, 6-1, 200, Jr.; OL/LB James Gelfer, 6-0, 180, Jr.; QB Kory Kemp, 5-8, 145, Jr.; OL/DL Doug Rowe, 6-3, 200, Jr.; DB Sean Supple, 5-10, 150, Jr.

Outlook: Wolves have nice mix of upperclassmen; Chandler likes team's chemistry. RB Collins missed a third of last season with neck injury, but will assume full-time rushing chores. QB Kemp is first-year starter, not flashy, but solid and quietly confident. TE/DL Cornell is D-I college prospect. Defense has good speed and should be strength.

Franklin Quakers

Location: Seattle

Coach: Joe Slye (20th year, 92-82)

2002: 2-6 (9th), 2-7

Returning starters (4 offense, 4 defense): RB/LB Damiko Cheatham, 5-7, 180, Jr.; DL Jeff Cheatham, 6-3, 255, Sr.; DB Nick Glover, 5-8, 165, So.; RB/LB Larry Hutchinson, 6-0, 185, Sr.; DE Julian Scott, 5-10, 215, Sr.

Other key returners: LB Manny Davido, 6-0, 190, Sr.; DE Brett Wickland, 6-1, 205, Sr.

Impact newcomers: LB Andre Davis, 6-0, 200, Fr.; DB/WR DeAngelo Jones, 6-3, 165, Fr.

Outlook: Quakers' biggest concern is depth as just 35 players turned out. Team has some talented individuals, however, led by RB/LB Hutchinson, who has added 10 pounds of muscle and is expected to be primary ground threat, and DL Cheatham. Glover, a sophomore, will start at QB. Franklin allowed most points in conference last year (42.2 per game) and must improve on that number to move up in the standings.

Garfield Bulldogs

Location: Seattle

Coach: Scott Laigo (2nd year, 2-7)

2002: 2-6 (10th), 2-7

Returning starters (4 offense, 6 defense): LB Endure Dinish, 6-2, 205, Jr.; LB David Melton, 5-8, 155, Sr.; OL/DE Sam Rennebohm, 6-3, 235, Sr.; WR/S DeAndre Rivers, 6-0, 170, Sr.; OL/DE Mike Wiley, 6-3, 245, Sr.; OL/DT Jordan Wilson, 5-11, 315, Jr.;

Other key returners: DT Aaron Gaines, 6-4, 275, Sr.; QB/DB Jeremiah Walters, 5-11, 170, Sr.

Impact newcomers: WR/DB Donte Davis, 5-9, 175, Jr.; RB/DB Dawnte Greene, 5-10, 175, Jr.; TE Dominque Holman, 6-1, 235, Jr.

Outlook: Bulldogs have 75 players, up from 47. Team speed should be strength. Depth on lines is a concern. Walters, who started one game at QB, has improved arm strength. Main target will be WR Rivers. No single RB has emerged, so Garfield will go by committee. Junior LB Dinish is already a big-time prospect. Bulldogs were most-penalized team in conference last year and should improve with Laigo's commitment to discipline.

Inglemoor Vikings

Location: Kenmore

Coach: Frank Naish (25th year, 134-89)

2002: 3-5 (6th), 4-5

Returning starters (4 offense, 4 defense): WR/S Steve Anderson, 5-11, 185, Sr.; RB/LB John Broetje, 5-11, 215, Sr.; QB/S Steve Campbell, 6-1, 170, Jr.; QB/S Dan Howard, 6-1, 175, Jr.; RB/LB Allen Dillard, 5-10, 185, Sr.; OL/DL Jordan White-Frisbee, 6-5, 290, Sr.

Other key returners: OL/DL Greg Brown, 5-10, 225, Sr.; WR/DB Peter Deelstra, 5-11, 180, Sr.; TE/LB Matt Flambeures, 6-1, 205, Sr.; RB/LB Tom Guinan, 5-9, 175, Jr.; RB/LB Mike Sewell, 5-8, 170, Jr.; OL/DL Papp Sinteppadon, 5-10, 205, Sr.

Impact newcomers: RB/LB Derek Bender, 5-10, 190, Sr.; OL/DL J.R. Berrard, 6-0, 230, Jr.; OL/DL Scott Etier, 6-0, 220, Jr.; OL/DL Jon Flugstad, 5-10, 190, Sr.; RB/S Caleb Jessup, 5-11, 165, So.; RB/LB Sean Kelly, 5-10, 170, So.; OL/DL Ben Krows, 5-11, 205, Sr.; WR/DB John Lewis, 5-10, 160, Sr.; WR/DB Chris Miller, 6-1, 165, Sr.; WR/DB Scott Nordquist, 5-9, 165, Jr.; RB/LB Eric Sergio, 5-11, 176, Jr.; OL/DL Kevin Simmons, 5-10, 215, Sr.; OL/DL Joe Thornley, 5-11, 215, Sr.; RB/DB Luke Victor, 5-9, 175, Sr.; RB/DB Steve Wells, 5-11, 160, So.; OL/DL Joel White-Frisbee, 6-3, 255, So.; WR/DB Joel Wickman, 5-8, 150, Jr.

Outlook: Vikings had conference's best rushing defense (107.8 yds/game) and should be strong up front again, with three returning linemen, led by Jordan White-Frisbee, and three returning LBs. Offensive line largely untested. Depth at WR a plus. QB Campbell threw for 478 yards. Spaghetti Bowl showdown with Northshore rival and defending conference champ Bothell looms in Week 1.

Juanita Rebels

Location: Kirkland

Coach: Mike Pluschke (3rd year, 7-11)

2002: 3-5 (7th), 3-6

Returning starters (5 offense, 8 defense): OL/DL Mark Brame, 6-0, 225, Sr.; OL/DL Nick Dwyer, 6-0, 225, Sr.; RB/DB Richie Keller, 5-10, 175, Sr.; OL/LB Joe Luzzi, 6-2, 245, Sr.; WR/DB Pat Parnell, 5-10, 180, Sr.; WR/DB Adam Pickrell, 6-2, 190, Sr.; WR/DB Michael Rennaker, 6-1, 180, Jr.; DE/WR Faraz Rouhani, 5-11, 175, Sr.; OL/DL Daniel Vandermolen, 6-2, 275, Sr.; TE/LB Walter Winter, 6-5, 235, Sr.

Other key returners: WR/DB Tim Bandel, 6-4, 190, Sr.; QB/DB Cort Koenig, 6-2, 180, Jr.

Impact newcomers: WR/LB/K Jay Davidson, 5-11, 190, Sr.; WR/DB Nick Gibson, 6-0, 170, Jr.; TE/LB Matt Grager, 6-2, 200, Jr.; RB/DB Brandon Judy, 5-11, 170, Jr.; WR/DB Michael Minerich, 6-0, 165, Jr.; WR/DB Bryant Sharifi, 5-10, 175, Jr.; QB/DB Bryan Walters, 5-10, 145, So.

Outlook: Rebels ranked last in conference in total defense (359.9 yds/game) last year, but return eight starters on that side of the ball. LBs Winter, Luzzi and Grager average 6-3, 227. Winter led KingCo 4A in tackles (80) and has given an oral commitment to UW. Five seniors start on offensive line. RB Judy, who runs anchor leg on school's 400 relay team, moves into huge void left by Brad Farrel, now playing at EWU. Parnell, a QB last year, has moved to WR, where he could be one of team's playmakers. Depth is a concern with only 44 players out, down from 58 last season.

Lake Washington Kangaroos

Location: Kirkland

Coach: Tim Tramp (6th year, 25-22)

2002: 2-6 (8th), 2-7

Returning starters (4 offense, 5 defense): WR Dana Bjurstrom, 6-2, 175, Jr.; TE Brock Cote, 6-3, 195, Sr.; DE Larson Haakenstad, 6-1, 185, Sr.; OL/DL E.B. Hutchinson, 6-2, 255, Sr.; DL Rich Lee-Kim, 6-0, 275, Sr.; QB Ryan Staudacher, 6-3, 180, Jr.; OL/DL Anthony Toledo, 5-10, 265, Jr.; WR/S Mike Warga, 5-11, 170, Sr.

Other key returners: K/P Paul Dickey, 6-3, 170, Jr.; OL Joel Mooers, 6-1, 235, Sr.; WR/FS Tommy Nhoksayakham, 6-0, 175, Sr.; OL/LB Carlos Rosas, 5-9, 170, Sr.; LB John Shifton, 6-0, 165, Sr.

Impact newcomers: RB/LB Travis Ashenbrenner, 5-10, 170, Sr.; WR/LB Jeff Fritchman, 5-10, 160, Sr.; RB/LB Frank Fu, 5-10, 168, Jr.; OL Trevor Larson, 5-10, 170, Jr.; OL/LB Christian Noriega, 5-9, 185, Jr.; FB/DL Mason Siddick, 6-0, 210, Jr.; WR/CB Kyle Speed, 5-10, 145, Jr.

Outlook: QB Staudacher (137 of 245, 1,663 yds, 11 TDs) led conference in passing as soph. S Warga leads defense that ranked second against pass (82 yds/game) last season. Young team has matured. Lack of size on offensive line a concern.

Redmond Mustangs

Location: Redmond

Coach: Jon Eagle (3rd year, 12-7)

2002: 6-2 (3rd), 7-3 (lost to Kentridge in district playoffs)

Returning starters (6 offense, 7 defense): DL Mitch Colleran, 6-4, 210, Sr.; P/K Jira Cooley, 5-11, 150, Sr.; S Ryan Gregson, 6-0, 175, Sr.; OL Jared Jones, 6-2, 275, Sr.; LB Aaron Landis, 6-0, 190, Jr.; OL Anthony Lang, 6-3, 280, Sr.; DL C.J. Marzitte, 5-11, 200, Sr.; FS Marty McLain, 5-11, 170, Sr.; DL Kevin Michael, 6-2, 205, Sr.; RB DeMarko Morris, 6-1, 195, Sr.; TE Stephen Pugel, 6-3, 205, Sr.; LB Cam Smith, 6-2, 210, Sr.; OL Stephen Smith, 6-2, 280, Sr.;

Other key returner: WR Jozmar Willis, 6-2, 185, Jr.

Impact newcomer: FB/DL Kevin Othieno, 6-1, 245, So.

Outlook: RB Morris will be counted on to fill void left by departure of Jon Williams, conference's leading scorer and a 1,600-yard rusher. Huge offensive line, with three returning starters, averages 282 pounds. Seniors Cole Crockett, last year's JV starter, and 6-7 Boom Madison are competing for QB job, with Crockett a slight favorite. Eagle, who coached at Evergreen of Vancouver from 1988-2000, has 99 career victories.

Roosevelt Roughriders

Location: Seattle

Coach: Jeff Ware (1st year)

2002: 1-7 (11th), 2-8

Returning starters (4 offense, 8 defense): TE/DT Taylor Argens, 6-4, 220, Sr.; OL/NG Nick Bainbridge, 5-8, 220, Sr.; RB/S Tristan Eastburn, 6-2, 180, Sr.; OL/DT Jullian Evans, 6-3, 250, Sr.; OL/LB Gordon Richmond, 5-11, 185, Sr.; RB/LB Kyle Smith, 5-11, 185, Sr.; OL/LB Marc Staiger, 5-10, 165, Sr.; FB/LB Ben Thorsteinson, 6-1, 185, Sr.; WR/S Luke Walker, 6-1, 175, Sr.

Other key returners: OL/LB Jason Boyd, 5-8, 175, Jr.; WR/DB Monty Diaz, 5-10, 150, Sr.; FB/LB Merrill Jeffrey, 5-11, 175, Jr.; QB/S Webb Miller, 5-11, 185, Sr.; OL/DT Paul Nolan, 5-11, 195, Jr.; QB/S Jeff Richmond, 6-3, 180, Sr.

Impact newcomers: RB/LB Miles Kenney, 6-0, 170, So.; TE/DT Michael Odland, 6-3, 210, So.; K/P Spencer Schomaker, 6-3, 180, Jr.

Outlook: First-year coach Ware implemented a more intensive offseason conditioning program and hopes team's newfound strength and stamina will pay dividends. OL/DT Evans was first-team, All-KingCo pick. Evans, TE/DT Argens and RB/S Eastburn have potential to play D-I or I-AA football. QB Miller started one game, has great arm and confidence of teammates. Roughriders finished last in conference in total offense (186.3 yds/game) and 10th in total defense (335.4 yds/game) last season.

Woodinville Falcons

Location: Woodinville

Coach: Mark Leander (2nd year, 8-2)

2002: 7-1 (2nd), 8-2 (lost to Kentwood in district playoffs)

Returning starters (2 offense, 2 defense): OL Casey Bulyca, 6-7, 295, Sr.; WR/DB Cory Nicol, 5-11, 165, Jr.; QB/DB Matt Tuiasosopo, 6-2, 210, Sr.

Other key returners: OL Jack Andrews, 6-0, 180, Sr.; LB Jeff Acomb, 6-0, 190, Sr.; RB Shawn Gizynski, 5-10, 205, Sr.; DL Kevin Grimes, 6-3, 210, Sr.; DL Tyler Hancock, 6-0, 215, Sr.; DB Bryan Ninomiya, 6-0, 175, Sr.; DL Austin Pracht, 6-3, 250, Sr.

Impact newcomers: LB Mike Boroughs, 6-1, 190, Sr.; WR Bryant Bullock, 5-11, 155, Jr.; LB Jason Carpenter, 6-0, 200, Jr.; OL Jason Engelbrecht, 6-1, 210, Jr.; OL Jared Haines, 6-4, 212, Jr.; DB Shiloh Keo, 5-9, 140, So.; OL Luke Hippely, 6-0, 190, So.; WR Joey Stivala, 5-9, 155, Jr.; DL Kevin Krause, 6-0, 220, Sr.; WR Sam McVey, 6-4, 200, Sr.

Outlook: Falcons had conference's best rushing offense (247.8 yds/game) and return option QB Tuiasosopo, state's top recruit. Tuiasosopo (23 of 35, 580 yds, 7 TDs; 338 yds rushing, 6 TDs) missed four games with knee injury last year. OL Bulyca, a second-team, All-KingCo selection, has given oral commitment to UW and will lead young offensive line. Defense, too, is young.
