Notebook: Crenshaw, Bauer featured at Merrill Lynch
Ben Crenshaw, two-time winner of the Masters, will join Beth Bauer, LPGA rookie of the year in 2002, as the featured players in the annual Merrill Lynch Invitational Aug. 10-11 at the TPC at Snoqualmie Ridge.
In other years, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Nancy Lopez, Fred Couples, Mark O'Meara, Curtis Strange, John Daly and Juli Inkster have played in a charity skins match and conducted clinics.
The clinic is schedule for 11:30 a.m. Monday, with the skins match at 1:30 p.m. For information call 253-851-8932.
WJGA championships begin today
The Washington Junior Golf Association championships begin today at Overlake Golf and Country Club in Medina, Glendale Country Club in Bellevue and Tam O'Shanter Golf Club in Bellevue.
There will be a cut after today's round for the final round tomorrow at Overlake.
The WJGA began in 1977. PGA Tour veterans Fred Couples, Rick Fehr, Kirk Triplett, Jess Daley and Mark Wurtz all participated in state junior golf, as did Tracy Hanson and Michelle Wooding Murphy of the LPGA.
Joel Dahmen of Clarkston, Connor Donnelly of Seattle, Jordan Burns of Longview and Kyle Stanley of Gig Harbor will represent the state in the Boys Junior America's Cup in Henderson, Nev.
The girls team that will compete in Whitefish, Mont., is comprised of Kim Shin of Shoreline, Amy Eneroth of Colbert, Ellie Brophy of Spokane and Christy Yun of University Place.
Shin ready to defend
Shin will defend her title next week at the 48th Pacific Northwest Junior Girls Amateur championship at Wing Point Golf and Country Club on Bainbridge Island.
Shin scored a 2-and-1 win a year ago over Amy Wang of Glendale.
Play begins Tuesday with 18 holes of stroke play to qualify the top 16 for the championship flight. Also in the field is Everett's Renee Skidmore, the 2002 qualifying medalist.
