Memorial service planned Monday for Dr. Belding Scribner

A memorial service for Dr. Belding H. Scribner, the kidney-dialysis pioneer who died last week near his Portage Bay houseboat, has been scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday at the Hogness Auditorium at the University of Washington Health Sciences Center, 1959 N.E. Pacific St.

A reception will follow.

Dr. Scribner was a professor emeritus of medicine at UW. In 1960, he invented a device that changed kidney failure from a fatal to a treatable disease, improving millions of lives.

He died June 19 at age 82. The King County Medical Examiner's Office said he drowned but also had suffered a mild heart attack.

The family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the UW Scribner Dialysis Fund, care of UW Medicine, 1325 Fourth Ave., Suite 2000, Seattle WA 98101.
