Where are they now? Tom Chambers
Flip through old team photos of the Sonics in the 1980s and one can tell these were the good times. The smiling faces foreshadow happy seasons that included 32-9 home records, playoff semifinal runs and even quirky moments like the "postponement due to rain" when the Coliseum roof leaked, canceling a game against Phoenix in 1986.
The team also was full of transition. Barry Ackerley purchased the team in 1983, the Sonics played in different arenas (Kingdome and Coliseum) and made coaching changes.
Then there were the individual efforts, such as the one from Tom Chambers. The 6-foot-10 center out of Utah played five seasons (1983-88) in Seattle, averaging 20.4 points and 6.6 rebounds. Twice he and two other Sonics finished the season ranked among the league's top-20 scorers. In 1987, Chambers was named to the All-Star team, which was played at the Kingdome. He was voted the game's MVP.
Chambers became the NBA's first unrestricted free agent in 1988 and signed with the Phoenix Suns, where he was named an All-Star three more times. In 1993 he married rodeo queen Nicole Paige Hymas.
Since 1997, Chambers, 43, has worked for the Suns' front office as a community-relations representative. He lives in Phoenix and has six children.
