Where are they now? Hersey Hawkins
Hersey Hawkins still is on the sideline flashing his pearly white smile, only the sharpshooting he was known for while playing 13 seasons in the NBA has morphed into a sharp tongue — for broadcasting.
Since retiring, the former Sonic (1995-99) has joined the Memphis Grizzlies as part of their broadcasting staff. As a player, Hawkins, now 36, finished 10th in NBA history in three-point field goals made (1,226).
With fans chanting, "Feed the Hawk," Hawkins made 47.3 percent of his shots to help the Sonics win a team-record 64 regular-season games in 1995-96. The Sonics advanced to '96 Finals, where they faced Hawkins' hometown Chicago Bulls.
The Sonics lost that series 4-2, but the playoffs were Hawkins' glitter time. In three playoff appearances, a combined 43 games, Hawkins shot 46.1 percent and surprised some with several 20-point games.
"I don't think I was included in the scouting report," he said.
With a changing in coaching regimes — Paul Westphal in for George Karl — the Sonics moved to shed veteran baggage in 1999. Hawkins was traded to Chicago that summer. He played one season there, then was traded to Charlotte. He retired in 2001.
Today, Hawkins lives in Memphis, Tenn., with his wife, Jennifer, and three sons.
