McCaw's death ruled accidental

SEATTLE — Billionaire Keith McCaw accidentally drowned in a hot tub at his Seattle mansion Dec. 15, and there was no indication that drugs or alcohol contributed to his death, the King County Medical Examiner's Office has concluded.

Relatives and friends initially believed McCaw, 49, the youngest of four brothers who made their fortunes in the cellular-phone business, might have suffered a heart attack or stroke.

Police and medics responding to McCaw's home on Lake Washington found him in the spa and bleeding from the head.

"It makes it even more of a mystery," Dennis Weibling, a family spokesman, said yesterday of the autopsy report. "No one was around, and no one will ever know what happened, whether he hit his head."

The 43-year-old man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree assault, eluding police and violation of a no-contact order. He is being held on $20,000 bail, said sheriff's Capt. Kevin Prentiss.

The man was arrested after police responded to a 911 call in the 15900 block of Highway 99 north of Lynnwood from a 37-year-old woman. Detectives are investigating the woman's statement that he had held her at knifepoint for two to three weeks, Prentiss said.
