Seamount - Pierce Division team capsules

Clover Park Warriors

Location: Lakewood, suburban Tacoma (Clover Park School District)

Coach: Jim Goode (2nd year, 3-6 record)

2001: 1-5 (6th), 3-6 overall

Returning starters (3 offense, 6 defense): OT Evan Kirkigaard, 6-4, 275, Sr.; QB Christian Tommervik, 5-10, 175, Sr.; WR Chris Robinson, 5-9, 180, Sr.; LB Paul Stevens, 6-4, 225, Sr.; DE Ropati Pitoitua, 6-7, 240, Sr.; DT Gave Tuivaiave, 6-1, 170, Sr.; CB Ira Jarmoniz, 5-9, 175, Sr.; FS Frank Sandaval, 5-7, 170, Sr.; LB Alex Brenner, 6-1, 225, Sr.; LB Livingston Filimaua, 5-9, 180, Sr.

Other key returners: RB Gerald Nuttal, 5-6, 170, Sr.; C A.J. Middleton, 5-11, 250, Jr.

Impact newcomers: WR DeShawn Foifua, 6-2, 185, Sr.; Marquis Amis, 6-1, 185, Sr.; QB Tavita Pritchard, 6-4, 165, So.

Outlook: Warriors lost last year's best player, RB/DB Shelton Sampson to UW, but team should have better talent overall. Tommervik is one of CP's best runners and can throw, too, and Warriors plan to do more of that. Nuttal doesn't have Sampson's quickness (few do), but is a better inside runner, according to Goode. Defense looks staunch, thanks to D-1 recruits Stevens and Pitoitua, and Goode plans to two-platoon as much as possible. Keeping the front-line players healthy is a key, since there's a drop-off in talent from there. Moving up much in this tough division won't be easy.

Fife Trojans

Location: Fife

Coach: Adam Greve (4th year, 9-18)

2001: 3-3 (4th), 5-4 overall

Returning starters (8 offense, 7 defense): QB/DB Brandon Elliott, 6-2, 215, Sr.; RB/LB Shane Glasenarp, 5-10, 190, Sr.; RB/LB Adam Hunter, 6-3, 240, sr.; RB/DB Ryan DeLong, 5-10, 190, Sr.; RB/DB Cavell Reed, 5-11, 170, Sr.; C/DE Chris Arostegui, 6-0, 240, Sr.; OG/DL Aaron Brown, 5-10, 225, Sr.; OT/DL Bobby Wall, 6-2, 240, Sr.

Other key returners: WR/DB Jake Bolam, 6-1, 180, Sr.; TE/OT/DE Tyler Larson, 6-0, 190, Jr.; RB/LB Ron Warner, 5-9, 180, Sr.; DE Jake Davison, 6-2, 190, So.; K Josh Brewer, 6-0, 170, Sr.

Impact newcomers: RB/LB Paul Brewer, 5-10, 180, So.; TE/LB Shane Bussey, 6-2, 190, Jr.; WR/DB Paul Hoffman, 6-1, 180, Jr.; RB/DB Terrell Houston, 5-8, 160, Jr.

Outlook: Hunter, a physical LB with a head-hunter mentality, is getting a lot of looks around Pac-10. Elliott, bigger and stronger, is another key. Depth on line, where Arostegui is a three-year starter, is a concern. Trojans have been able to beat the teams below them, but must win some big ones — like division opener against Peninsula in Week 4 — to take next step.

Franklin Pierce Cardinals

Location: Tacoma (Franklin Pierce School District)

Coach: Howard Lutton (14th year)

2001: 0-6 (7th), 1-8

Returning starters (5 offense, 5 defense): TE/ILB Jared Maui, 6-3, 220, Sr.; RB/LB Jacob Maui, 6-0, 205, Jr.; QB/DB Jeff Triplett, 6-0, 178, Jr.; RB/DB Blaine McConnell, 5-10, 185, Jr. OT/DT Justin Jaquez, 6-1, 238, Sr.; RB/OLB Joe Salzbrun, 5-11, 185, Sr.

Other key returners: ILB Damien Mills, 5-10, 190, Jr.; DB Tim Becker, 6-1, 165, Sr.; K Jason Shaffer, 5-10, 140, Sr.

Impact newcomers: OLB Dan Henthorn, 6-1, 160, Jr.; RB Rodney Williams, 6-0, 165, So.

Outlook: Cardinals are still young with only eight seniors. Jared Maui leads good LB corps and Triplett is solid on both sides of ball (he had six picks as sophomore DB last year). Look for him to throw more and run option. Cards should be tougher, but so is division.

Lakes Lancers

Location: Lakewood, suburban Tacoma

Coach: Dave Miller (3rd year, 21-2)

2001: 6-0 (1st), 9-1 overall; lost to Lynden 24-21 in first round of 3A state playoffs.

Returning starters (4 offense, 5 defense): RB Akeem Anthony, 5-6, 165, Sr.; RB/DB Tony Russo, 5-11, 185, Sr.; OT/DT Russ Stanbery, 6-2, 250, Sr.; OG/DT Viliamu Kuaea, 6-2, 300, Sr.; LB/TE Derek Coxson, 6-1, 210, Sr.; DB/QB Jeff Wells, 6-3, 205, Sr.; LB/OG Junior Iafeta, 5-11, 240, Sr.; DE/TE Nate Johnson, 6-4, 240, Jr.

Other key returners: DE/OT Casey Pyle, 6-1, 210, Sr.; LB/RB Chase Howard, 5-11, 190, Sr.; DB/WR Mike Wilson, 5-10, 180, Sr.

Impact newcomers: OLB Don Jacobs, 5-11, 185, So.; WR/DB Matt Johnson, 5-9, 170, Sr.; DE Bryant Smith, 6-1, 195, Jr.; WR/DB Danton Julian, 5-8, 175, Jr.; QB Zak Abdul-Latif, 6-4, 190, Sr.; QB Erich Williams, 6-2, 180, So.

Outlook: After upset loss in opening round of last year's state playoffs, Lancers are hungry for bigger finish (they lost 2000 title game to Skyline). Anthony is tiny, but is expected to continue remarkable career and Russo makes it a nifty 1-2 package in backfield. Wells steps in at QB and has tools to have a big year, according to Miller. Kuaea is a load on the line, which goes six deep. How well inexperienced receivers play will be a key. Could be best of Miller's three teams.

Peninsula Seahawks

Location: Gig Harbor (Peninsula school district)

Coach: Russ Filkins (8th year)

2001: 5-1 (2nd), 6-3 overall

Returning starters (3 offense, 4 defense): WR/DB Aaron Lilley, 6-2, 175, Sr.; RB/OLB Chris Perez, 6-1, 180, Sr.; TE/DE Cam Jensen 6-5-1/2, 245, Sr.; TD Chris Windsor, 6-0, 260, Sr.; ILB Wes Nelson, 6-0, 185, Sr.; DT Sean Queenin, 6-1, 305, Sr.

Other key returners: OG/ILB Adam Rowley, 5-11, 210, Sr.; DB Bruce Hubbard, 5-10, 165, Jr.; FB D.J. Junell, 5-10, 220, Sr.; OT/DE Brian Baillie, 6-2, 220, Sr.; QB Mike Roncevich, 6-2, 170, Jr.

Impact newcomer: WR/FS Kyle Selfors, 6-1, 175, Sr.

Outlook: Senior-laden Seahawks, who start just three underclassmen, are expected to be better, but so is nearly everyone else in the division. Perez had a couple of 200-yard games last year and will get lots of touches. Roncevich was 2-1 when called into starting duty and is equally adept as runner and passer. Seahawks are expected to be in top three, but expect more from themselves.

Washington Patriots

Location: Tacoma (Franklin Pierce School District)

Coach: Gary Jeffers (7th year, 23-32)

2001: 2-4 (5th), 4-5 overall

Returning starters (4 offense, 4 defense): RB/LB Terrance Thomas, 5-9, 175, Sr.; OL/DL Richie Siolo, 5-11, 250, Jr.; WR/DB Jake Cassidy, 5-9, 160, Sr.; QB/DB Brandon Tetreault, 5-9, 150, Sr.; DL/OL Yuteson Fuaau, 5-11, 250, Sr.; LB/FB Mike Pulalusi, 5-11, 220, Jr.

Other key returners: RB/DB Kiki Wilks, 5-6, 150, Jr.; WR/DB Wade Williams, 5-10, 170, Sr.; WR/DB Andrew Bryce, 5-11, 170, Jr.

Impact newcomers: TE/LB Mike Fuaau, 5-11, 180, So; OL/DL Tanu Feligai, 6-4, 260, So.; TE/ILB Roger Cousins, 5-10, 180, Sr.

Outlook: They're thin in numbers, but Jeffers believes Patriots' top-line players are on par with nearly every else's in the division. Avoiding injuries is crucial. Thomas was all-league LB as a junior, recording 18 sacks, and will get his shares of carries on offense along with Wilks and Pulalusi. Washington will need to throw better than last year and Tetreault has the arm to do it.

White River Hornets

Location: Buckley (White River School District)

Coach: Dominic Yarrington (4th year, 11-17, including 6 forfeits in 2000)

2001: 4-2 (3rd), 6-3 overall; lost to Evergreen 41-19 in Seamount playoffs

Returning starters (8 offense, 7 defense): QB Brad Addink, 6-4, 200, Sr.; OL/DL Joel Weed, 6-2, 240, Sr.; TE/LB Brad Kalein, 6-0, 190, Sr.; WR/QB/DB Jason Gran, 6-1, 180, Jr.; OL/DL Paul Pirone, 5-11, 240, Jr.; WR Dayton Hoard, 5-11, 160, Jr.; OL Ryan Fairchild, 5-88, 200, Sr.; DB/RB Brock Lacey, 5-11, 190, Sr.; LB Isaiah Horton, 5-11, 210, Sr.; DB/RB Jerry Thomas, 5-11, 185, Jr.

Other key returner: WR/DB Bo Hubbard, 5-10, 160, Jr.

Impact newcomers: WR/DB Tyler Slawson, 5-8, 160, Jr.; LB Joey Arsanto, 6-0, 190, Jr.

Outlook: Yarrington calls this the best talent he's had at White River. Addink is a college prospect who fits pass-happy offense perfectly. He will miss opener as broken foot continues to mend, but should be ready the rest of the way. If he goes down again, Gran is more than capable of filling in, but that leaves a void in receiving corps. Overall depth is questionable. Hornets shooting for moon — a.k.a. Lakes — but at the least should settle among stars.
