Outlook: With only one returning senior starter, Red Wolves will turn to youth to get program headed in winning direction. Eight starters are back from young, inexperienced group.

Interlake Saints

Location: Bellevue

Coach: Justin Petersen (2nd year), 1-13-2 record

2001 record: 1-11-1 league, 1-13-2 overall (5th in Valley Division)

Returning starters: D Linsey Watanabe, Sr.; MF Alison Albrecht, Sr.; D Bailee Neyland, Jr.; D Vanessa Simmonds, Jr.; MF Shawn Moore, So.; D Nicole Gunn, So.; F Bryn Gibson, So.; MF Nina Timberlake, So.; D-GK Sydney Dela Cruz, So.

Other key returnees: MF Stephanie Jervey, Jr.; D Kim Golave, Jr.; D Jessie Buck, So.; MF Leslie Otto, So.; F Whitney Engle, So.

Impact newcomer: F Amelia Johnson, So.

Outlook: A year ago, Saints produced school's first win or tie since 1998 season, with as many as nine freshman playing at one time. Improvement is expected, but will it be enough to lift Interlake from last place? Allowing fewer goals is key.

Issaquah Indians

Location: Issaquah

Coach: Julia Bamba (1st year)

2001 record: 5-5-3 league, 7-6-3 overall (3rd in Valley Division)

Returning starters: D Erin Frame, Sr.; D Erin Kenney, Sr.; MF Mackenzie Berg, Sr.; MF Lauren Dascenzo, So.; F Karen Frost, Jr.

Impact newcomers: GK Laura Bergman, Sr.; D Lindsey Kasser, Fr.; D Gail Butler, So.; MF Valerie Carrol, Jr.; F Marissa Parsons, Jr.; MF Kaley Evanger, Jr.; D Jillian Winterfield, So.; MF Kirsten Wood, So.

Outlook: The school hired Bamba, former high-school and college player who won back-to-back state titles at Federal Way in 1992 and '93, for her first varsity coaching assignment. At 24, she is youngest coach in KingCo 3A. Team returns five starters and one of its top scoring threats in fleet-footed Frost. Indians lost starting D Sara Burdick to torn ACL this summer.

Liberty Patriots

Location: Issaquah

Coach: Derek Heinz (1st year)

2001 record: 9-3-1 league, 14-5-2 overall (1st in Valley Division; 1st in KingCo 3A tournament; 3rd in state tournament)

Returning starters: D Breanne Vandenbos, Sr.; D Cherie Beck, Sr.; MF Christine Mollet, Sr.; MF/F Angelina Kane, Sr.; F Vicki Noon, Sr.; MF Lindsay Mehtala, Sr.; MF/F Lindsey Failor, Sr.; MF Allison Hedien, Sr.; D Kelsey Cochran, Sr.

Impact newcomers: MF Sarah Creveling, So.; D Amy Randall, Jr.; D Kaitlin Paulson, Sr.; MF Marnie Koziol, So.; GK Jackie Burnett, Sr.; GK Claire Hunter, So.

Outlook: Patriots must replace four All-KingCo first-team players, including GK Jamie Corwin, so their run of three state semifinal appearances in four years could end. However, strong tradition remains on their side. Heinz thinks his team will have tough defense. Mollet returns after knee injury last year, and should be a top goal-scoring threat. Could this team be underestimated by rest of league? Mixed signals.

Mercer Island Islanders

Location: Mercer Island

Coach: Bryan Mazza (3rd year), 16-7-5 record

2001 record: 9-1-3 league, 11-3-3 overall (2nd in Sky Division; lost to Issaquah 2-1 in OT in first round of KingCo 3A playoffs)

Impact newcomers: D Liz Oldenburg, So.; D Tara McTavish, Jr.; D Lynne Tempest, So.; MF Brynn Regan, So.; F Lindsey Hallgren, Sr.; D Kelly McLeod, So.; F Bethany Patterson, Jr.

Outlook: With eight of 11 starters back, Islanders have sights on Sky Division and KingCo 3A championships. Of eight returning players, seven were voted to All-KingCo teams. Mercer Island installed new FieldTurf at school and players are excited about getting away from muddy grass field. Conte was No. 3 scorer in KingCo 3A last season with 19 points on nine goals and an assist. Richards finished sixth with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Is this team to beat in KingCo 3A? Maybe.

Mount Si Wildcats

Location: Snoqualmie

Outlook: Berndt finished No. 2 in KingCo 3A scoring with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. Mount Si finished 2001 season with a lot of momentum, winning four of its final five matches. Wildcats need to play better defense to challenge for division title.

Location: Bellevue

Coach: Karsten Hoffman (4th year), record not available

2001 record: 6-6-1 league, 8-7-2 overall (lost to Bellevue 1-0 in first round of KingCo 3A playoffs)

Outlook: Spartans lost top scorer Maggie MacCool to graduation and University of Arizona, but figure to have enough talent remaining to challenge for Sky Division title again. Kinneman figures to take over main goal-scoring role.
