Training camp highlights: Day 17

One missed field goal — a 31-yard attempt in Saturday's exhibition opener — was enough to seal Shayne Graham's fate: the Seahawks waived the second-year kicker yesterday.

Graham was not at the morning practice yesterday and had made statements to teammates as recently as Monday night that he felt he would be cut. Graham became the second player to be released in training camp.

Saturday in Seattle against the Indianapolis Colts, Graham had one kickoff of 60 yards and also made an extra point in the Seahawks' 28-10 loss. His miss happened in the second quarter.

CAMP EXTRAS

PRACTICES: One full-contact session in the morning and one no-contact session in the afternoon.

STARS OF THE DAY: The defensive line.

BIG PLAYS: DT Chad Eaton and DE Brandon Mitchell blew through the offensive line on separate occasions to get to quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, though they could not sack him. Other linemen also got into the gaps to disrupt running plays, all during the morning practice.

TEMPERATURES: 76 degrees in the morning, 90 in the afternoon.

CROWD: 110 in the morning, 170 in the afternoon.

JUST FOR KICKS: LB Tim Terry, who received a slight concussion in practice last week, has been wearing a bright red jersey to signify that no one can make contact with him because of the injury. Seahawks quarterbacks also wear red jerseys for the same reason. "I get confused with the quarterbacks too much," Terry quipped yesterday after the morning practice.

The roster move leaves the Seahawks with two kickers, incumbent veteran Rian Lindell and Aaron Elling, who is trying to make a team out of training camp for the second straight year after being waived by the Miami Dolphins before last season.

"However it works out, you know there's only going to be one of you (as the kicker)," Lindell said. "Of course, I want this job, so for him to be gone kind of had to happen for me to get the job. But I definitely wish him the best, and as far as Aaron (Elling) and I, we just have to keep doing what we're doing. Apparently, someone thinks we're good enough. We've made it this far."

Graham, 24, competed with Lindell for the kicking position last summer but was cut at the end of training camp. Later last season, he was acquired by the Buffalo Bills and made 6 of 8 field-goal tries in six games.

Elling and Graham were the only kickers used in Saturday's game, with Elling connecting on a 38-yard attempt in the first quarter but later missing a 57-yard try right before halftime.

"I don't think anybody had really separated themselves," said Pete Rodriguez, the Seahawks' special-teams coordinator. "But we had to make a decision. Shayne did not make the kick that you need to make in a crucial situation. He looked good last year, but it wasn't that way in camp (this year). Elling has great potential, he has a very strong leg and we had to make a decision."

Lindell and Elling each kicked four field goals yesterday in practice, two apiece from 34 and 36 yards. Lindell was 4 for 4; Elling missed a 34-yarder.

"Shayne is going to go somewhere," Elling said. "Now I can get twice as many reps and work harder to get better. You can start to see a light at the end of the tunnel. We kind of knew something would happen this week, and he missed a short one and it was just bad luck."

Notes

• LB Marcus Bell stayed after the morning practice to work out as a long snapper, the position held by J.P. Darche. "They told me to come over and try it out," Bell said. "Just in case they need someone to go in. I enjoy it."

• TE Jerramy Stevens hurt his right shoulder during a pass play in the morning practice, and had ice on it later in the day. He returned to practice in the afternoon.

• C Robbie Tobeck practiced yesterday despite tendinitis, and TE Russell Stewart has missed the past two days of practice with a shoulder injury.

• CB Willie Williams missed the afternoon practice because of a mild groin strain.
