Fremont dinosaurs growing a new coat of green

All this talk of topiary raised a burning question: How are the dinosaurs faring in Fremont?

The mammoth metal pair, known as Apatosaurus and baby, moved from the Pacific Science Center to a shady Canal-side spot at Phinney Avenue North and North 34th Street about three years ago.

Fremont won the pair from the Center, whose gardeners wearied of chasing squirrels from the ivy, for a mere dollar.

And though the underlying frames have shown few signs of life for some time (scaring some locals into believing they'd stand barren forever), a lush, climbing ivy is finally making its way up the critters.

At last viewing, the baby was almost covered (only its head and tail poked out) and mom's legs and tail were a lovely shade of green.

She's expected to have full coverage in about three years.
