Daisey wows 'em in New York, gets even with Amazon.comedy
Goodbye Amazon.com, hello Off-Broadway success!
Mike Daisey, a former employee of Seattle-based Amazon.com and fixture on Seattle's comedy and fringe theater scene, recently opened his one-man show "21 Dog Years: Doing Time @ Amazon.com" at New York's Cherry Lane Theatre.
The reviews for Daisey's autobiographical critique of Web-biz foibles, which had its premiere at Seattle's Speakeasy Cafe last year, were generally laudatory. Here's a sampling:
Robert Dominguez, New York Daily News: "... a raucous and consistently funny one-man show. While some disgruntled — and crazed — employees return to their workplaces with a loaded gun, Daisey gets his revenge in a 90-minute diatribe about joining the pioneering Internet company at a time when dot-com mania and the so-called 'new economy' were in full swing."
Mike Kuchwara, The Associated Press: "Daisey is a very funny man, a hilarious high-tech muckraker who takes the audience on a giddy, 90-minute ride through his roller-coaster career at Amazon, founded by the messiah of the Net, Jeff Bezos.
"... Who knew unemployment could make for such happy entertainment?"
Bruce Weber, The New York Times: "The comic caricatures of those he encountered (at Amazon.com) ... may not be surprising in the character types they send up. But Mr. Daisey nails them with damning detail, and his often vociferous malice is delicious.
"... Mr. Daisey has won enough comic points to make you feel as if the good guy has triumphed. And you wish him well in his new career."
