Alice in Chains timeline

1987: Alice in Chains forms in Seattle.

1990: Columbia releases the band's first EP, "We Die Young." Debut album, "Facelift," is released. "We Die Young" becomes top-5 metal track. In December, band sells out Moore Theatre.

1991: Band nominated for American Music Award for favorite heavy-metal artist. They lose. Plays part of sleazy bar band in Cameron Crowe's film, "Singles," filmed in Seattle. Tours with Megadeth and Van Halen. Nominated for a Grammy for best heavy-metal performance. They lose again. "Facelift" certified gold. Band records second EP, "Sap."

1992: "Would?" becomes biggest hit to-date, setting the stage for "Dirt."

1993: Band headlines Lollapalooza tour. "Dirt" certified double-platinum.

1994: "Jar Of Flies debuts" at No. 1 on Billboard album chart. Layne Staley begins work with Pearl Jam's Mike McCready and others on the band that becomes Mad Season. Album released in March of 1995. Single "River of Deceit" becomes a top-5 alternative hit. Album certified gold in May 1995.

1995: "Alice In Chains" is released, debuts at top of Billboard album chart. Certified platinum in 1996.

1996: Band tapes a performance for "MTV Unplugged."

1999: Band releases "Nothing Safe Best Of The Box."
