Sounders Select women hire Bruch as new soccer coach

The Seattle Sounders Select Women's team hired Bobby Bruch as coach for the 2002 season.
The current head coach of the Seattle Pacific women's team, Bruch brings an extensive background in soccer to the Sounders' organization. He was a professional soccer player for more than seven seasons with teams in the Continental Indoor Soccer League (CISL), American Professional Soccer League (APSL) and the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL).
A Northwest native and graduate of Newport High School, Bruch played on the state championship team in 1982. He also won back-to-back Division II national titles at SPU in 1985 and 1986. He was a two-time all-conference selection and an all-region pick as a senior.
UW's Klaas gets national honor
Husky C.J. Klaas has been named to the Soccer America Magazine Men's All-Freshman Soccer Team. The team will be featured in the Feb. 4 issue of the magazine.
Klaas, a midfielder, was named 2001 Pac-10 Conference Freshman of the Year after helping the Huskies to a 13-6 record.

• Michigan's Otto Olson, a sixth-year senior and Everett High graduate, defeated Penn's Rick Springman 13-8 at 174 pounds in the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star wrestling classic in Hempstead, N.Y. Olson, the top-ranked wrestler at 174, improved to 29-0.
• The 11th-ranked Washington women's tennis team hosts No. 44 San Diego State tomorrow at 2 p.m., No. 29 Washington State on Saturday and No. 26 Alabama on Sunday. The Cougars are anchored by Erica Perkins, a senior ranked 38th, and a product of Seattle's University Prep.
The No. 21 Washington men's tennis team will take to the road for the first time this season to face No. 58 Brigham Young and unranked Oregon, both in Eugene.
• The four-day Washington Open swim meet begins at 6 p.m. today with the 1,000-yard freestyle at the King County Aquatics Center. The Huskies will be joined in the collegiate division by Central Washington and Seattle University.
