TACOMA — In a matchup of the past two Class 4A state boys basketball champions, the Foss Falcons beat the Lincoln Abes 66-61 in a Narrows League game last night at Foss High School.
Foss outscored the Abes 16-10 in the fourth quarter to upset the fourth-ranked Abes, who now have lost two in a row for a 3-2 league record and 8-2 mark overall.
Foss, the 2000 state champion, improved to 4-1 in the league and 8-3 overall.
"We're pretty inexperienced and we really played a team game," Foss Coach John Ruby said. "It's a big win because it keeps us in a good spot in our (Bay) division."
Lincoln's Oregon State signee, Justin Holt, tip-jammed a missed free throw to cut the Foss lead to five late in the fourth quarter. But after the play, Holt earned a technical foul for taunting the crowd and Foss' Greg Shadowvine converted the two free throws and teammate Idris Joyce hit a field goal to push the lead to nine points.
Shadowvine hit 4 of 5 free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with 22 points. Holt scored a game-high 24 points.
