Football: Robinson's sprint launches Beach win
Trailing early, Rainier Beach put its comeback on a fast track and took off.
The Vikings quickly overcame an early seven-point deficit — as quickly as it took for Nate Robinson to return the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a score — and steamrolled West Seattle with six straight touchdowns en route to a 40-13 Metro League victory.
It was the fifth straight win for Rainier Beach (4-0 Metro, 6-1 overall) needs to beat Eastside Catholic next Saturday to set up a crossover showdown in Week 9 against the Bainbridge-O'Dea survivor for the Metro League championship.
"We're not looking past anyone," Rainier Beach Coach Mark Haley said. "Every game is a big one, and what happens later doesn't matter if you can't beat the team in front of you."
The West Seattle game was a case in point, as the Vikings quickly discovered they couldn't establish a running game with any consistency against the Indians (3-1, 4-3). So they turned to quarterback Jamal Guy to make things happen.
Guy passed for three touchdowns — and started a fourth with a lateral toss to Fred Baisy that turned into a 34-yard scoring run. By the time he departed the game in the final period, Guy had completed 7 of 10 passes for 160 yards. Two of his TD tosses went to Robbie Delgardo, for 40 and 23 yards.
Robinson also rushed for 81 yards on nine carries — including a 13-yard third-quarter score.
Rainier Beach's defense also came up big, intercepting West Seattle quarterback Hans Utu three times and forcing three Indians fumbles.
