Former WSU great Don Paul dies at 75

Don Paul, a Washington State University baseball and football star from Fife who was a five-time All-Pro defensive back, has died in Eugene, Ore. He was 75.

Paul, who once was general manager of the Seattle Sounders soccer team, was found dead in his Eugene apartment by neighbors Sept. 7. He had been suffering from bladder cancer.

Paul played on the 1950 WSU baseball team that advanced to the championship game of the College World Series.

He played on two NFL championship teams in Cleveland, going to the Browns after starting his pro career with the Chicago Cardinals.

Paul, who played on both offense and defense during his career as did most players in his era, was inducted into the WSU Hall of Fame in 1980. In 1988, he published his autobiography, "I Went Both Ways."
