Times' photographer wins top prize
TACOMA — The Seattle Times and The News Tribune of Tacoma won top prizes in the annual Washington-Oregon Associated Press photo contest.
The Times' Alan Berner won the Cowles Cup for a photo package titled "The Hunt for the Great Gray."
Dean Koepfler of The News Tribune won the Reid Blackburn Memorial for a feature photo titled "The Final Sweet Sounds."
The Cowles Cup is named for William Hutchison Cowles, a former publisher of The Spokesman-Review. It has been presented annually since 1952 to the best entry in the Washington-Oregon photo contest.
The Blackburn Memorial is named for a photographer from The Columbian of Vancouver, Wash., who was killed in the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens. It is awarded annually to the top feature photo in the contest.
The awards were presented as part of the editors meeting of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association, which concluded Friday.
