UW rowers guide Americans in worlds
Four Washington rowers helped the United States place in the top five in two events on the final day of the World Rowing Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Sophomore John Lorton, a product of University Prep, was on the U.S. quadruple sculls team that placed fifth in 5 minutes, 46.01 seconds.
Sophomore Heidi Hurn, an Eastlake High product, junior Anna Mickelson, a Newport High grad, and junior coxswain Mary Whipple helped the U.S. women's eight finish fourth in 6:05.88. Also competing for the Americans were Seattle's Caroline Ingham, Portland's Kate Johnson, Megan Dirkmaat, Maite Urtasun, Kate Ronkainen and Wendy Wilbur.
Lorton was joined by Grant Nichols, Henry Nuzum and Aquill Abdullah.

• Several area clubs placed in the Masters National championship regatta in Indianapolis. Vashon Island Rowing Club won the master women's lightweight double sculls in classes B-C (ages 36-42) and D (50-54). Lake Washington Rowing Club won the master's women's pair class B (36-42) and women's four with coxswain class C (43-49)
• Jesus Santiago of Seattle improved to 4-0 with an eight-round decision over Daryll Sukrow of Vancouver, B.C., in a welterweight bout at the Coeur D'Alene Casino in Worley, Idaho. Judges had Santiago winning the bout 78-74, 79-73 and 79-73.
• Sonoma State, ranked 11th in NCAA Division II, earned a 1-0 victory over Western Washington in nonconference women's soccer. Cassidy Martinez converted a penalty kick as the Cossacks (2-0) handed the Vikings (0-2) their second loss.
• Mike Falasca went 3 for 4 as Brooklawn, N.J., pounded 15 hits in an 11-8 win over Albany, Ga., in pool play at the American Legion World Series in Yakima.
Also, Omaha, Neb., scored eight runs in the fourth to capture a 10-0 win over Napoleon, Ohio.
Midwest City, Okla., scored four in the ninth inning for an 11-5 victory over Milford, Mass.
Brooklawn (54-4) rallied from behind twice, taking the lead for good with a four-run seventh that broke a 6-6 tie.
George Cleary, who finished 3 for 4, capped the scoring in Omaha's fourth with a two-run double.
Milford's defense committed three errors in the ninth, including a dropped a foul ball that allowed Midwest City's Corey Shafer to get on base. David Lucas and Dayton Ries followed with doubles for the Outlaws.
