LAKE CHELAN - When Judge C.C. Campbell built his resort at the south end of Lake Chelan in 1901, he couldn't have foreseen that it would still be a Chelan landmark 100 years later.

But he did have an inkling of the hotel's historic potential. He enclosed a time capsule containing mementos of the day in the finial, the decorative cap atop the flagpole out front.

The judge's descendants still own the hotel, and Campbell family members will host a public centennial celebration next Sunday, with fireworks, jazz and bagpipe music, tours of the resort and a scavenger hunt for the kids. The festivities begin at 1 p.m., and the time capsule will be retrieved and opened at 3:30 that afternoon.

For guests, summer activities at the resort or nearby include swimming, fishing, water-skiing and touring the lake by boat. It's a short drive to a waterslide park, bumper boats and go-carts. Rowboats, sailboats, personal watercraft, diving gear and windsurfers can be rented.

And there are two 18-hole golf courses nearby: Desert Canyon, which won a national poll among women golfers, and Chelan Municipal Golf Course. There is also a putting course and a nine-hole course in Manson, five miles north along the lake.

Winter sports within driving distance include downhill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing and ice skating.

Also nearby: The Lake Chelan Museum features pioneer and Native American history; Banjo Creek Farm, about 12 miles away, just outside Manson, offers a petting zoo, wagon rides, gold panning and Western barbeques; Ohme Gardens in Wenatchee consists of alpine landscaping on a rocky bluff; Mill Bay Casino in Manson has alcohol-free gambling; and Rocky Reach Dam, on the Columbia River a few miles north of Wenatchee, offers tours from its visitor center.

To get to Chelan and Campbell's Resort: Take Interstate 90 over Snoqualmie Pass and Blewett Pass to Wenatchee, then north on Highway 97 along the Columbia River to Chelan. The hotel is at the end of the bridge leading into town. Allow 3½ hours for the drive. Or take Interstate 5 to Highway 2 heading over Stevens Pass to Highway 97, a slightly longer trip.
