How hot is it?

The summer concert season is so hot, we had to narrow our list down to just the essential 100. We could have listed dozens more.

In addition to those on our Hot 100 list, at least a half-dozen more shows will probably be announced in the coming weeks, including some big names at the Gorge and the Puyallup Fair.

Last year was the biggest in concert-tour history, with ticket sales surpassing the billion-dollar mark in North America. Despite the slowing economy, that figure is expected to be reached again this year, and maybe even topped, according to Billboard, the music-industry trade magazine.

"While few major blockbusters in the vein of Tina Turner's $109 million trek of last year are on the books, there are plenty of proven acts touring to make promoters optimistic," the publication reported.

The Northwest is getting most of the major summer tours, including those of Janet Jackson, Eric Clapton, Stevie Nicks, blink-182, Destiny's Child, the Backstreet Boys, Aerosmith, Dave Matthews and "Ozzfest." James Taylor may announce a Northwest date soon, and Madonna and 'N Sync may be coming around in the fall or winter.

Plan ahead, get your tickets early and rock on in the summer of 2001!

Here are Patrick MacDonald's Top 100 concerts for the summer of 2001. Unless otherwise noted, tickets are at Ticketmaster outlets: 206-628-0888, www.ticketmaster.com. If there is no ticket information, tickets are not yet on sale.
