Lake City soccer team advances to nationals

SALT LAKE CITY - The Lake City Hawks, an over-30 men's soccer team, beat Computerstop of Seattle 4-1 yesterday for the Western Region championship and a spot in the National Cup finals next month.
The Hawks, coached by former Seattle Sounder Brian Schmetzer and with many former Sounder and SeaDog players on the roster, will join three other regional champions July 13-15 in Orlando.
The Lake City team beat opponents from New Mexico, Los Angeles and Utah before beating Afterburn of Seattle 7-1 in the semifinals.
Goalkeeper Dave Gagner and defender Walt Schmetzer led a Hawk defense that allowed two goals in five games.
Seattle cyclist wins in Texas
HOUSTON - Seattle cyclist Rad Cunningham of the Broadmark Capital Cycling Team won the points race at an American Velodrome Challenge race Saturday.
Cunningham, 22, dominated the 35-kilometer race, lapping the field twice. He also finished second in the miss-and-out and third in the 10-mile scratch race.
The results from the summer-long, nine-race series will be used by USA Cycling to select national team members and riders for international events.
Cunningham will compete in the points race and Madison competition at the National Track Cycling Championships June 15-16 in Blaine, Minn.
