Golf: Holy Names girls claim 3A team title; Newport boys second

LYNDEN - Sung Ea Lee, a junior from Clover Park of suburban Tacoma, used a blistering 1-over-par 73 in the second round to easily win the Class 3A state girls golf championship at Homestead Farms Golf Resort yesterday.
Breanna Minnitti of Holy Names was third (79-79-158), leading the Cougars from Seattle to the team title. Holy Names scored 73-1/2 points to edge Tumwater's Black Hills, which scored 72. Franklin Pierce (67) finished third, followed by Clover Park (61), Burlington-Edison (54), Bainbridge (49-1/2) and Skyline (25-1/2).
Lee's 36-hole total of 149 beat Bellingham's Lauren Ressler (77-79-156) by seven shots. Ressler, a junior, was second at the 4A tournament each of the past two seasons while playing for Sehome.
Other tournaments
3A boys - At Bellingham's Lake Padden Golf Course, Tim Feenstra of Lynden sank a two-foot par putt on the first playoff hole to edge Bainbridge's Joe Lanza for the title. They were tied at 3-under 141 over 36 holes.
Lynden won the team title, its first, with 74 points. Newport of Bellevue was second with 64 points, followed by Mount Vernon and defending champ Lakeside of Seattle, both with 62.
Feenstra and Lanza shot 1-under 71s in the final round after sharing the first-round lead Monday with sophomore Charles Koh of Newport. Koh finished third at 143 after a second-day 73.
Defending champion Reid Rader of Lakeside was fourth at even-par 144, one shot better than Mount Vernon's Paul Knue.
4A girls - At Sudden Valley, near Bellingham, Lani Elston of Spokane's Ferris shot a par-72 to finish with a two-day total of 143 and a seven-stroke victory. Eisenhower's Paige Mackenzie was second at 150 and Gonzaga Prep's Katie Brophy finished third at 154.
Ferris had 101 points and won its second straight team title. Gonzaga Prep was runner-up with 74-1/2.
1A boys - At North Bellingham Golf Course, King's freshman Richard Woo shot a 3-over 75 for a two-day total of 2-over 146 and a three-stroke victory. King's claimed its second straight team title, scoring 47 points. Seattle Christian was second with 35½ points.
Aaron Azzarito of Kettle Falls and Liberty freshman Craig Leslie tied for second at 149. Woo's teammate, Erik Davenny, tied for fourth at 152 with Eric Vanderpol of Seattle Christian.
1A/B girls - At Bellingham Golf & Country Club, Overlake senior Stephanie Wei capped her impressive high-school career by running away from the field for her second straight title. She helped Overlake repeat as team champion.
The Yale-bound Wei, who struggled to an 82 but still led by 10 strokes after Monday's first round, played better yesterday. She shot a 78 for a two-day total of 160, 26 ahead of Jamie Britton of St. John-Endicott.
Wei was one of six players to shoot under 200. Grace Academy's Leanne Eneix was at 193 and Bellevue Christian's MacKenzie Wallace at 197.
Overlake had 124½ points, far outdistancing runner-up Tekoa-Oakesdale (73).
B boys - At Shuksan Golf Club in Bellingham, twins Rom and Galen Hirss of Lopez finished first and seventh, respectively, to lead the Lobos to the team title. Rom Hirss shot 72-74-146 to beat runner-up Tyler Austin of Lyle by five strokes.
Brett Wigren of Northwest Christian was third at 152. Sam Niccolls (156) of Bush was sixth. Jesse Uman of Bush and Gary Dupree of Northwest Christian tied for eighth at 160.
Lopez scored 44 points, followed by Northwest Christian (36-1/2), Bush (30) and Davenport (23-1/2).
2A girls - At Semiahmoo in Blaine, Chelan junior Stephanie Parsley lost five strokes off her first-round lead, but held on to beat Omak's Mary Schwichienberg by three strokes. Mount Baker won the team title.
2A boys -- At Blaine's Loomis Trail Golf Course, Lynden Christian's Andrew Bostrom shot a 3-under 69 despite a bogey on the first hole and won by three strokes. He had a two-day total of 143. Chad Carlson of Goldendale was second at 146 and defending champ Jake Easterly of Cascade (Leavenworth) was third at 147. Lynden Christian won the team title.
