'Gladiator': Pretty cardboard

"Gladiator" for best picture? Come on! It was beautifully photographed and the actors were beautifully dressed - but they were all cardboard, in a story that's been done before. The ethereal "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" would have been a much better choice.

'Tiger' was a cut above

It seems to me that "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" pretty much swept all of the other categories and so I just keep wondering how that happens and it does not get best picture? Having seen many films from Taiwan and China, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was above all superior in its cinematography, acting, score, special effects. What's so special about a man in a skirt cutting people's heads off?

Singing praises for Dylan

I have just one word to say about the Academy Awards program: (best original song winner) Bob Dylan. He stole the show. And I swear the audience admired him more than most of the rest of the winners, no matter how glamorous.

A Hudson admirer

In response to (last week's) comment about Kate Hudson's (best supporting actress) nomination: I bought the "Almost Famous" DVD the day it was released and her subtle, charming, effervescent performance as Penny Lane is heartfelt and moving; her performance, the writing and the soundtrack are my favorite things about the movie.
