UW student earns top honor for computer research

He has yet to earn his bachelor's degree but already has a patent. Now, University of Washington senior Kevin Zatloukal's research in data compression and caching has earned him the Computing Research Association's Outstanding Undergraduate award.
The association is a national organization of more than 180 academic computer-science and computer-engineering departments. Each year it honors the top male and female undergraduate researchers in those fields. This year's other winner is Lisa Anthony of Drexel University.
Zatloukal, who grew up in Kenmore, has worked three summers at Microsoft Research, where he has been involved in building the next generation of Web services. His research has resulted in three publications and a patent. He will receive a $1,000 prize at an awards banquet in San Jose tomorrow.
UW seniors Matt Rosencrantz and Steve Zhang were among 27 students nationwide who received honorable mentions. Last year, UW student Emma Brunskill was the female runner-up and Adnan Sulejmanpasic received honorable mention.
"UW computer science and engineering is blessed with some of the finest students in the nation," said department Chairman Ed Lazowska. "I'm thrilled at the recognition they're getting."
