Class B basketball: Evergreen Lutheran boys win state-tourney opener

SPOKANE - Joel Stuebs, Trevor Zehfus and Walter Juergens each scored 14 points as Evergreen Lutheran beat Pe Ell 60-46 last night in the first round of the Class B boys state basketball tournament at the Spokane Arena.

Zehfus also grabbed eight rebounds as the Eagles (22-4) came back from a 26-20 halftime deficit. The Trojans (20-7) were led by Chris Phelps, who had 22 points and eight rebounds.

Evergreen Lutheran was the state-tournament runner-up in 1999. The Eagles from Des Moines won the Tri-District Tournament last weekend at Ingraham High School.

Other boys games

Ritzville 55, Shoreline Christian 45 - Josh Whitman scored 15 points to lead lead the Broncos (20-6). Brandon Borth added 12 points for Ritzville (20-6), while Brett Pflugrath had seven rebounds.

The Crusaders (19-8) were led by Jeff House, who had 17 points. Tim Groen had 12 rebounds and Dustin De Koekkoek 11 rebounds.

Entiat 55, St. John-Endicott 54 - Albert Martinez scored 17 points for the Tigers (23-1), and the Eagles missed a shot at the buzzer.

Chris Richards led Entiat with eight rebounds, and teammate Jeff Barnes scored 12 points.

The Eagles (18-9) were led by Neill Bafus, with 23 points while Allen Simpson and Levi Johnstone each had 10 points. The Eagles placed second at state last year.

Wilbur-Creston 91, Neah Bay 79 - A.J Nelson scored 21 points as the Wildcats won.

Trevor Sheffels and Brian Johnson each scored 15 points for Wilbur-Creston (22-4). The Wildcats finished fourth in the state last year.

Neah Bay (16-3) was led by Josh Buckingham, who had 24 points.

Garfield-Palouse 79, Napavine 42 - Adam Elder scored 24 points as the Vikings won easily. Jason Fox added 26 points for Garfield-Palouse (24-1), while Aaron Elder had 12 points and six rebounds.

Josh Morris scored 18 points for the Tigers (14-11).

Willapa Valley 67, Pomeroy 52 - Chris Bannish scored 28 points as the Vikings from Menlo won. Bannish hit 13 of 16 from the free-throw line as Willapa Valley (23-1) advanced. Pomeroy fell to 19-6.

Jereme Chapman and Matt Noren combined for 24 points for Willapa Valley. Jory Feider had 20 points for Pomeroy.

St. George's 59, Day Star Christian 48 - Drew Moser scored 18 points to lead the Dragons from Spokane. Chris Johnson scored 14 points for St. George's (24-3), and Robert Witherspoon added 10 points.

Jacob Jones led all scorers with 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds for Day Star Christian (19-5) of Moses Lake. J.D. Dietzen scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds.

Girls games

Almira-Coulee-Hartline 50, Willapa Valley 31 - Callie Clark scored 18 points as the Warriors won. Almira-Coulee-Hartline (20-5) got 10 points from Jackie Evans. Kelsy Balcom and Erica Fuller each contributed five rebounds for the winners.

Kristen Berry and Whitney Niemcziek were the leading scorers for the Vikings (14-10), with eight and five points, respectively. Berry led in rebounds with nine, followed by Elizabeth Sheary and Jamie Avery, who each had five.

Sunnyside Christian 44, Bush 31 - Joreen Mensonides scored 13 points to lead the Knights' victory. Kacey Harris added 12 points for Sunnyside Christian (18-5), and Lisa Groeneweg contributed 12 rebounds.

The Blazers (16-10) from Seattle were led by Stefanie Hyde, with eight points, and McKenzie Carpenter, who had nine rebounds.

Republic 59, Pateros 49 - Katy Giddings scored 19 points to lead the Tigers (21-8). Miryia Libbey scored for the Nannies (20-3).

Waterville 52, Mossyrock 38 - Deena Hanson scored 10 points and had eight rebounds as the Shockers (20-6) beat the Vikings (18-6). Valley Christian 71, Shoreline Christian 39 - Carli Smith scored 21 points and pulled down 19 rebounds as the Panthers from Spokane beat Shoreline Christian. Brandi Nunnally scored 16 points and had seven rebounds for Valley Christian (24-1). Kasie Cupp added 10 points.

Darci Madison scored 11 points and had five rebounds for Shoreline Christian (19-7).

Tekoa-Oakesdale 59, North Beach 38 - Katie Driscoll scored 18 points to lead the Nighthawks (22-4) past the Hyaks (20-4) from Ocean Shores. Michelle Faunch added 14 and Betsy Smart got 10 points as Tekoa-Oakesdale (22-4) advanced in the winner's bracket. Smart also grabbed nine rebounds.
