An 18-year-old Pacific Lutheran University freshman was killed instantly when a deck collapsed on her during an off-campus party Saturday night, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office identified her as Monica Lightell of Steilacoom. Five others were taken to hospitals for various injuries. As of yesterday evening, all but one had been treated and released.
Lightell and those injured were beneath the deck where alcohol was being served, said Pierce County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Troyer. About 150 people attended the party, but Troyer said it is unknown how many were on the deck or below it when it collapsed at 11:45 p.m. The PLU campus is alcohol-free. But university officials know alcohol is often served at off-campus parties, said university spokeswoman Katherine Hedland.
The Parkland home, in the 13200 block of 10th Avenue South, was the rented residence of three PLU students. They were charging admission to the party; many of the partygoers were underage, Troyer said.
Although off-campus houses are not under PLU jurisdiction, Hedland said the university will conduct its own investigation. The incident may also prompt the university to review the health and alcohol-awareness program it provides for all new students, Hedland said.
Yesterday, the university arranged counselors and pastors to lead grief-counseling sessions throughout the week. The school plans a memorial service for Lightell, but a time has not yet been determined.
Troyer said a building inspector examined the deck yesterday and was expected to file a report by this afternoon.
