MUKILTEO - The Kamiak seniors, particularly Jeff Knudson, made the most of their opening game of the WesCo 4A boys basketball tournament against Snohomish.

The Knights beat the Panthers 77-71 last night behind 32 points by Knudson.

"I guess this was our senior night," Kamiak Coach Jeff Leary said. "Knudson, (Mike) Boyle, (Scott) Szalay and (Scott) Haight really came to play."

That quartet accounted for 65 points. Szalay scored 16, Boyle 10 and Haight seven.

But it was Knudson who single-handedly staked the Knights (13-8) to a game-opening 7-0 lead over Snohomish (16-6).

From there, the Panthers had to play catch-up. With the exception of a 19-19 tie early in the second period, Kamiak had the lead from start to finish.

The 6-foot-6 Knudson hurt the Panthers from the outside, inside and free-throw line. He made four three-point shots and hit 5 of 6 free throws in the final 2:38 of the game.

If Kamiak showed a weakness, it was in coping with the speedy Snohomish offense. Panther guards Ryan Sommer and Matt Holzer each scored 22 points, often on a quick transition game.

With the win, Kamiak travels to Bellingham tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. to face Sehome (17-3), WesCo 4A's Northern Division champion.

"Sehome is tough at home," Leary said, "but we are grateful to be going anywhere."

Snohomish will face Marysville-Pilchuck on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Jackson High School in a loser-out contest.

Chris Grounds added 10 for Kamiak.
