Seattle Prep held off a late charge by Bishop Blanchet to edge the Braves 46-43 last night in a Metro League boys basketball game at Blanchet.

Leading 40-26 midway in the fourth quarter, Prep saw its lead dwindle to 42-38 after a three-pointer by Blanchet's Earl Manlangit with 33 seconds remaining. Then free throws by Jeffrey Day and Erik Bond sealed the win for Prep.

The win was hard-earned for the defending Class 3A state champion Panthers (10-0 Metro, 14-1 overall), who were coming off their first loss of the season to defending 4A state champion Foss in the King Holiday Hoopfest on Monday. Blanchet (5-5, 5-9) had a three-game winning streak snapped.

"It was good to get the win," said Bond, who had a game-high 16 points and 13 rebounds. "It helped expose our weaknesses like (Monday), and showed what we have to work on."

Prep did not shoot well early on, leading just 7-2 after the first quarter. But neither did Blanchet, who trailed 19-13 at halftime. Prep eventually found its shooting range, making key shots to go up 40-26 in the fourth before Blanchet made its late game run.

"It was important to our players that we didn't blow a 14-point lead," Prep Coach Chris Miller said. "We can learn from a win this time instead of a loss." This was the second of four games this week for the Panthers, who play Ingraham and Cleveland this weekend.

Day added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Panthers. Zach Simard had 14 points to lead Blanchet.

Rainier Beach 91, at West Seattle 53 - Randy Green scored 28 points, Rodrick Stewart 26 and Lodrick Stewart 13 as the third-ranked Vikings (9-1, 13-1) rolled to a Metro League victory. Dan Washington scored 16 for West Seattle (2-11, 2-13).

Chief Sealth 69, at O'Dea 68 - Future Husky Erroll Knight assisted Terry Timmons on a layup as time expired to give the ninth-ranked Seahawks (8-1, 11-2) the Metro League victory over the Irish (2-8, 5-9). Knight finished with 17 points, Mitchell Armstrong 16, Terrell Armstrong 14 and Timmons 12 for Sealth. Adam Hudson led O'Dea with 26 points, Darrell Thomas had 12 and Nicholas Zaehler 10.

Ballard 80, at Eastside Catholic 36 - Brian Spielman scored 22 points to lead four Beavers in double figures, with Ahnel Butler getting 14, Adam Nolting 12 and Raymond Butler 11 in the Metro League victory.

Cleveland 66, at Nathan Hale 62 -- Anthony Lee scored 18 points and Nolan Hickman and Pierre Dubois each had 13 to lead the Eagles to a Metro league win. After the teams were tied at 11 after the first quarter, Cleveland (6-4) built a 14-point halftime lead. Senior John Fulwiler led a Raider rally in the fourth quarter, scoring 21 of his game-high 29 points. Hale (3-7, 4-10) never got closer than four points.

Ingraham 71, at Lakeside 69 - After Jamal Shareef's three-pointer with seven seconds remaining forced overtime for the Lions, but the Rams pulled out the Metro League victory after Dominique Pie's free throw with 3.8 seconds left in the extra frame put Ingraham up for good. Mile Decaro scored and Durelle Sims each had 18 points for Ingraham (6-4, 8-5). Shareef scored 19, Johnny Mobley 14 and Matt Johnson and Henry Greeley each had 12 for the Lions (2-8, 4-11).
