Golf / Metro League
O'Dea junior Adam Hengtgen didn't realize he had a 1-stroke lead on the final hole of the Metro League golf tournament yesterday at Jefferson Park.
So, when he and Nic Alexander of Seattle Prep both parred the hole, Hengtgen thought he was headed for a playoff.
Surprise! He's the league champion.
"I thought we were even," said Hengtgen. He added that he "probably played better" thinking he was in a tie.
Hengtgen, who had opened with a 3-over 75 Tuesday at West Seattle Golf Course, shot an even-par 70 yesterday that featured a 2-under 34 on the front nine.
Alexander, finishing second for the second straight year, shot a 2-over 72 yesterday but led his team to the league title. Prep finished with 398 points as its top four golfers - Alexander, Andrew Patterson (75 yesterday), Eric Heggelund (74) and John Olson (72) finished 2-5-8-12.
O'Dea was second with 388 points and Blanchet third with 368.
The girls competition wasn't close - Holy Names rolled to its fifth straight league title, and defending champion Breana Minnitti won by 23 strokes.
Minnitti shot a 5-over 77 yesterday to finish with a two-day total of 155. Monica Reed of Seattle Prep shot 86 yesterday to finish at 178. Holy Names' Bethiel Girma was was third at 179 after shooting 91 yesterday.
Holy Names scored 582 points. Seattle Prep placed second with 510 and Lakeside third with 484.
