Merit scholarship semifinalist ranking earned by students

Newport, Inglemoor and Mercer Island High Schools led Eastside schools in the number of semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Eleven students from each of the three schools are among approximately 16,000 semifinalists nationwide. Becoming a semifinalist is the first stage of a process that will end next spring with scholarships for many of the students honored.

About 7,900 Merit Scholarship awards, worth more than $31 million, will be offered, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corp., a nonprofit organization.

The semifinalists on the Eastside are:
