Anacortes woman, 19, dies in head-on crash
DEMING, Whatcom County - An Anacortes woman died yesterday from injuries suffered in a two-car, head-on collision near Deming, about 15 miles east of Bellingham.
Katherine Compton, 19, was airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center shortly after the 9:50 p.m. Sunday crash. She was pronounced dead at 8:09 a.m. yesterday.
Compton was a passenger in a car driven by Joshua Korvin, 26, of Mount Vernon, who was listed in satisfactory condition yesterday with a fractured spine at a Bellingham hospital.
According to Washington State Patrol troopers, Korvin was driving in the eastbound lane of Washington Highway 542 when a pickup crossed over from the westbound lane. Despite Korvin's attempt to avoid the pickup, the vehicles crashed head-on.
The 28-year-old pickup driver was treated at the scene of the collision.
