High-school basketball / City vs. State all-star games

MILL CREEK - Whether he was leading his Jackson Timberwolves on a basketball fastbreak or guiding his team down the football field, Scott Kaloper was the true leader of his teams.

That's what Jackson High School football coach Joel Vincent and basketball coach Eddie Mascari will remember and miss most about Kaloper. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Kaloper, a guard in basketball and quarterback/defensive back in football, graduated recently.

"It's interesting that we asked Scotty to do for football what Eddie asked him to do for basketball," said Vincent. "I liken it a lot to running a fastbreak - you find open people and distribute the ball.

"Eddie asked him to take big shots and I asked him to take shots downfield throwing the ball."

Kaloper, who will turn 18 in August, might need to take a few shots with a basketball before he arrives in Yakima Friday for Saturday's Class 3A City vs. State all-star basketball game at the SunDome.

Kaloper spent last week practicing for and playing in the East-West All-State football game for the state's top 3A and 4A seniors, in Spokane. Kaloper, playing for the West, saw action at defensive back and on special teams.

Joining Kaloper on the State basketball team from WesCo 3A will be Everett's John Richer, a 6-1 guard. Scott Lowery, a 6-5 wing from Lake Stevens, will play for the City squad.

A guard for the State team, Kaloper will try to hit three-pointers instead of receivers.

"This week I need to work on my jump shot," said Kaloper, who added that he hadn't shot baskets all summer long. "It was a little rusty."

The shot will likely return by the time he gets to Yakima, but in the meantime, Kaloper can anticipate another week of playing with the state's best.

"It'll be fun to play," he said. "(Basketball is) not as strenuous."

Kaloper enjoyed banner seasons in his two sports. While earning his third letter in football, he set a school record with 2,900 all-purpose yards. Kaloper also eclipsed school records in career rushing and passing yards and became the Timberwolves' all-time leader in pass completions, attempts and touchdown passes (15).

In basketball, Kaloper led his team to the Northwest 3A District tournament playing both guard positions. He averaged a team-high 15 points, four assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Kaloper decided football is his likely ticket to athletic success in college. He plans to walk on at the University of Washington as a quarterback.

Kaloper's father, Jerry, was the Huskies' starting quarterback in 1968. His brother, Todd, was Jackson's quarterback the two years before Scott arrived. The 2000 season will be the first at Jackson in which a Kaloper will not be under center.

Scott credits his father for teaching him how to be a quarterback and enhancing his athletic ability in all sports.

"All my game came from him," Scott said.

In basketball, Kaloper started the season at point, but moved to off guard when the Timberwolves needed his scoring. Kaloper, who had spent his offseason lifting weights and increasing his speed, made the position switch pay off, making the all-league first team. He became Jackson's on-court and locker-room leader.

"I was put in a position to lead and I stepped up," Kaloper said. "I helped out a lot with the younger kids and I was little more vocal. I showed by example."

Notes

-- Richer, who led Everett to the state tournament in basketball and finished sixth at the 3A state golf tournament, will play golf at Western Washington next year.

-- Lowery, a second-team all-league pick who averaged 10 points and almost six rebounds for Lake Stevens, will attend Washington State. His basketball future is uncertain.

-- Snohomish forward Will Van Duine, a first-team all-WesCo 4A basketball selection who later led the Panthers to the 4A boys state soccer championship, is on the City roster for the 4A all-star game.

The 6-4 Van Duine is undecided on a college. Snohomish Coach Len Bone said that if Van Duine chose basketball, it would be at a junior college. He said Gonzaga and Seattle Pacific were interested in Van Duine for soccer.

"I think he's going to wait and see how he plays (in Yakima)," Bone said. "I don't know if he's ready to give up both (sports) yet."
