High-school basketball / City vs. State all-star games

The competition started upstairs on the second floor of the family home.

Two brothers playing basketball on the "Jordan Jammer," a seven-foot indoor hoop that was more than a toy for Brent Douma when he played older brother Brian. The court may have been improvised, duct tape delineating the three-point line, but the games were serious.

"That's where we pretty much started our competition," Brian said.

Brian was three years older, always the gauge for Brent to test his skills.

"It was really hard for me to beat him," Brent said. "So whenever I did, I was really happy."

Brent grew up playing against his older brother, and in the three years since Brian graduated from Bellevue Christian, Brent has followed the path his brother blazed.

Like his brother, Brent played on the Bellevue Christian soccer team, a Class 1A state power. Brent was a shooting guard for the basketball team, too, averaging more than 20 points as a senior. He was selected to play in the Class 1A City vs. State all-star game Saturday at the SunDome in Yakima, becoming the first Bellevue Christian player to earn all-state honors since Brian.

The road has taken Brent all the way to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. Brent will enroll next fall as Brian begins his senior year at the school, which is a Douma family tradition.

Their mother, Gail, and father, Dean, both attended the school. Dean played four years on the basketball team. All four Douma children have followed suit, including older sisters Kendra and Kristin.

Brian tried to play both soccer and basketball when he enrolled in the fall 1997. He found his time stretched too thin and chose to focus on soccer.

Brent has soccer skills, too, scoring a team-high 20 goals for Bellevue Christian. Four of those goals were scored in the postseason as he led the Vikings to their fifth state title in nine years.

But Brent will play basketball in college, not soccer. He's taking his brother's advice, sticking to one sport. He will try to walk-on for Calvin's basketball team, which won the Division III national championship last season.

His high-school coach, Mike Downs, said Brent's ability to create shots is his greatest strength on the court.

"Right away I could see that (Brent) had the potential to be a good scorer," Downs said. "He has always shouldered the burden of scoring for our team, kind of a heavy burden when you know you have to go out and score."

Twice as a senior, Brent won games with a buzzer-beating shot. The most dramatic was in the Vikings' final home game of the regular season. Brent made a jumper from inside the free-throw line to beat rival King's, the third-place team in Class 1A last season.

While Brent is a slashing scorer, Brian is more of a perimeter player. He has a quick release, ready to shoot any time he's coming off screens.

In soccer, it's just the opposite. Brian has the ball skills, and is a better dribbler and passer than his younger brother, but it's Brent who has the more dangerous shot. His free kick against Overlake produced the only goal in the state-title game last fall.

However, basketball is Brent's favorite.

"Always has been," he said.

Brian still plays basketball, too, and when the brothers go one-on-one, it's anybody's game.

"I always get, `Can you beat your brother in basketball?' " Brent said. "A lot of people ask those questions. It's pretty even."

And on Monday, Brent accomplished a milestone victory against his brother when he beat Brian in golf for the first time.

"He was letting me hear about it," Brian said.

Just like Brent did when he beat his brother in grade-school on the mini-hoop upstairs.
