Woman dies when tree falls on golf cart in B.C.

VANCOUVER, B.C. - A Squamish woman described as a great leader in her community died when a falling tree crushed the golf cart she was driving on a course east of Kamloops, B.C.

Police say Linda Carney, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene by two doctors who were at the Rivershore Estates and Golf Links on Saturday afternoon.

Carney, who was well-known in the business community and an active volunteer in Squamish, north of Vancouver, and the ski-resort town of Whistler, had been playing in the Alpine Classic, a golf tournament to raise money for the B.C. Alpine Association.

Police said winds had been gusting throughout the day. Carney was driving the golf cart when the tree fell, caving in one side of the cart's roof, police said. Her husband, Owen, who was a passenger, escaped injury.
