SHORELINE - Less than five months after guiding Shorewood to the Class 4A girls state soccer championship, Gary Harris is moving across town.
Harris, who spent the last four years at Shorewood, has been named girls head coach at Shorecrest, Athletic Director Paul Lesh announced yesterday.
Harris, 38, a physical-education teacher at Einstein Middle School in Shoreline, hopes to teach at Shorecrest.
"I'm excited for the new challenge," Harris said. "I'm nervous because Teddy (Mitalas, the former Shorecrest girls coach) is a hard act to follow and I'm sad to leave Shorewood because I developed a lot of close relationships there."
Harris' record was 48-22-9 in four years at Shorewood.
He currently coaches the Shorecrest boys junior-varsity soccer team.
Two KingCo girls coaches quit
Two KingCo 4A girls basketball coaches resigned last week.
Woodinville Coach Alvin Horn, said he was quitting after one season (5-8, 8-14) to get away from certain parents. He was Woodinville's fourth coach in five years.
Bothell Coach Dave Gertlar's resigned after two seasons (20-24) for what he said were personal reasons.
Meanwhile, Gertlar has been named softball coach at Eastside Catholic, where Coach Marie Peterson was asked to resign after trying to recruit players on the internet.
Horn said, "I've been dealing with a few parents who, in their minds, thought if their child made the team they deserved equal playing time. The misconception a lot of parents make is that just because the child works hard does not make them competitive on the playing field."
