Carriere hawthorn (Crataegus x lavallei)
Hawthorns tend to be rugged, thorny trees that bloom in early spring with white flowers, followed by small red fruit. The Carriere hawthorn looks more like an evergreen crabapple tree, with its thick, glossy leaves and large, orange-red fruit. Both leaves and fruit remain late into the winter. Relatively common in Seattle, hawthorns love full sun and grow vase-shaped to about 20 feet. Because of their broad, rounded crown, they make an excellent parking strip or patio tree, if you can put up with messy fallen fruit.
