HOW THE PLAYERS WERE PICKS
The Seattle Times all-century team includes the greatest basketball players produced by Washington high schools. Players' accomplishments after high school were weighed heavily. More than 60 reporters, editors, coaches, college sports-information directors and historians were consulted statewide.
FIRST TEAM OF THE CENTURY, BOYS

F Detlef Schrempf Centralia 1981 6-10 Three-time NBA All-Star in 15th season. UW star won state title at Centralia, played for German Olympic team.
F Bob Houbregs Queen Anne 1949 6-8 Hook-shot specialist scored 49, averaged 25.6 as NCAA Player of Year. Led UW to '53 Final Four. Five years in NBA.
C James Edwards Roosevelt 1973 7-1 UW All-American is school's No. 5 all-time scorer. Played 19 seasons in NBA and won three titles with Pistons, Bulls.
SECOND TEAM OF THE CENTURY, BOYS
G Jason Terry Franklin 1995 6-2 Pac-10 Player of Year won national title at Arizona. Atlanta's 10th overall pick. Won two state titles.
G/F Doug Christie Rainier Beach 1988 6-6 Versatile swingman was first-round NBA pick, now in 7th NBA season. Led Rainier Beach to state title.
F Steve Hawes Mercer Island 1969 6-9 Rebounding machine played 10 NBA seasons. Led UW in scoring twice, rebounding three times.
F Jack Nichols Everett 1943 6-7 Push-shot artist was All-American at UW. On Celtics' first title team during 11-year NBA career.
C Jawann Oldham Cleveland 1976 7-0 Won two state titles, the last on arguably state's best team. Seattle U. star played eight NBA seasons.

Blair Rasmussen, Auburn, 1981: 7-footer was first-round pick, Pac-10 scoring champ at Oregon before 10-year NBA career.
Byron Beck, Kittitas, 1964: 6-9 small-school star had 10-year pro career with Denver Nuggets.
Michael Dickerson, Federal Way, 1994: Twice All-Pac-10, led Arizona to national title. First-round NBA pick, now 6-5 G/F with Vancouver.
Gene Conley, Richland, 1948: Before Bo and Deion, 6-8 two-sport WSU star won titles with NBA's Celtics and baseball's Braves.
Urgel "Slim" Wintermute, Longview, 1936: At 6-7, tallest of Oregon's Tall Firs was All-American on team that won first NCAA title in 1939.
Rod Derline, Elma, 1970: Rod The Rifle starred at Seattle U. and played two years with Sonics before knee injury ended career.
Tom Workman, Blanchet, 1963: 6-7 star of 27-0 Blanchet team later played at Seattle U., five years in pros.
Doug Smart, Garfield, 1955: 6-7 forward scored 30 on Wilt in college, still has UW's all-time marks for season, career rebounds and is No. 8 scorer.
George Irvine, Ballard, 1966: Nicknamed Hawkeye for outside shooting, 6-6 Washington star played six years in pros.
Paul Lindeman, Cowiche (now Highland), 1941: 6-7 All-American led WSU to '41 NCAA final. Won four national AAU titles with Phillips Oilers.

G Joyce Walker Garfield 1980 5-9 Three-time Parade All-American, averaged 38 on state-title team. LSU All-American was 2nd female Globetrotter.
G Sheila Lambert Chief Sealth 1997 5-7 JC All-American set or tied eight state-tourney scoring records. Four-time Metro scoring champ, 29.5 as senior.
G Jeanne Eggart-Helfer Walla Walla 1977 5-8 Parade All-American is WSU No. 1 career scorer (1,907) - male or female. Fourth in javelin at '80 Olympic Trials.
F Kate Starbird Lakes 1993 6-2 Scored 2,753 prep points. Player of Year and led Stanford to national title. Played for ABL's Seattle Reign, WNBA.
C Rhonda Smith Franklin 1991 6-2 All-American was Huskies' No. 2 career scorer, No. 4 rebounder. Averaged 27 points, 20 rebounds as prep senior. Played in pros.

G C.J. Sealey Sammamish 1977 5-8 Star of two state-title teams, then played at Seattle U., Portland St. Made Canadian Olympic team.
G Stacy Clinesmith Mead 1996 5-5 Four-year starter at UC-Santa Barbara at point. Two-time state tournament MVP, two state titles.
G Juli Coleman Issaquah 1981 5-8 All-American is Oregon State's No. 4 career scorer (1,840). Scored 60 in prep game, averaged 36.5.
F Jo Metzger-Levin Everett 1977 6-0 NAIA Hall of Famer, two-time All-American's 1,990 points still WWU's career mark.
C Naomi Mulitauaopele Chief Sealth 1994 6-4 One season with Reign after injury shortened career at Stanford. Third-team Parade All-American at Sealth.

Milena Flores, Snohomish, 1996: Quick 5-6 point guard was first-team All-Pac-10 in '99 as junior, led conference in assists (7.3).
Takiyah Jackson, Franklin/Lakeside, 1995: 6-1 forward was two-time prep All-American, won two state titles. Knee injuries limited her at UCLA.
Susan Anderson, Mount Baker, 1986: Gatorade National Player of Year, scored 1,236 career points for Texas. Played pro ball in Brazil.
Jenni Ruff, Mossyrock, 1992: Scored 41 for WSU in '96, led Pac-10 in scoring with 23.6 average.
Tara Davis, Rainier Beach, 1990: Played for Reign after starting four seasons for UW, scoring 1,143 points.
Tatum Brown, Foss, 1996: 6-4 center leads Arizona with 17-plus average. JC All-American at Central Arizona, where she won JUCO national title.
Karen Murray-Hodgins, Pasco, 1980: Third among UW's career scorers with 1,745 points, first female in Husky Hall of Fame. Played nine pro seasons in Europe.
Laurie Merlino, Fort Vancouver, 1987: 5-8 guard led state in scoring. All-Pac-10, scored 1,262 points for UW.
Sherri Johnson, Foster, 1987: Amazing scorer who hit 69 in one game, averaged 38.3. Played at Highline CC, UW.
Michelle Perkins, Lakeside, 1992: Three state titles in four years, including 29-0 1992 team. Played at UW.
