Girls Basketball; Unbeaten Garfield Rolls Past Mount Si

SNOQUALMIE - Garfield's girls basketball team is still unbeaten, thanks largely to a big second quarter in the Bulldogs' 47-30 nonleague victory over Mount Si yesterday.

Garfield (6-0) opened a 12-point halftime lead by outscoring Mount Si 15-6 in the quarter.

Jessica Wilkenson had eight points and 10 rebounds and Kanika Rogers had eight points and nine rebounds for Garfield.

Lindsay Ratcliff scored 11 points to lead Mount Si (2-5), a KingCo 3A team.

Rainier Beach 53, at Issaquah 45 - The Vikings (6-1) hit seven three-pointers and held the Indians (3-3) to 28-percent shooting from the field in a nonleague victory. Ebonee Newson led Rainier Beach with 18 points. Nicole Dascenzo scored 13 to lead Issaquah.

West Seattle 43, at Tyee 38 - The Indians (3-4) held off the Totems in a nonleague game despite terrible free-throw shooting. West Seattle made only 2 of 11 foul shots in the fourth quarter and 5 of 17 overall. Calli Saisslin scored 13 points for West Seattle.

Newport 63, at Eastlake 47 - Melissa Gorey and Jaylene Powaukee combined for 16 first-quarter points as the Knights (3-4) jumped on the Wolves (1-3) quickly on the way to a nonleague win. Eastlake held Powaukee to two points in the second half, but Gorey took over, scoring 19 of her 27 after halftime. Powaukee finished with 20 points. Eastlake's Jamie Nelson had 17.

Clover Park 68, at Renton 26 - Shannon Apodaca scored 25 points to lead the Warriors to an easy nonleague victory over the Indians (0-6). Clover Park led 22-3 after one quarter and 43-7 at halftime. Danett Green's 10 points led Renton.

Juneau Douglas 51, Federal Way 38 - The Eagles (4-3) lost in the semifinals of the Running Mutes Tundra Tipoff Tournament in Fairbanks, Alaska, despite Leslie Sandberg's 15 points and Claire Zovko's 12. Zovko made three three-pointers. Federal Way was to play Wasilla, Alaska, for third place today. Juneau Douglas and the host Lathrop High team from Fairbanks were in the final.

Natoma Co. Wyo., 45, Kent-Meridian 43 - Kent-Meridian (6-2) couldn't hold a five-point lead after three quarters and lost in the Wolves Classic in Las Vegas. Quinn Thomas scored all 15 of her points on three-pointers for K-M. Monday, Thomas scored 11 points as the Royals started the tournament with a 32-30 victory over Castlemont, Calif.

Shorecrest 59, Deming, N.M. 53 - Erin Zabukovec had 24 points and 10 rebounds as the Scots improved to 2-1 in the Santa Cruz Shootout in Tucson. The Scots (4-2) were scheduled to play Mingus High of Cottonwood, Ariz., today. Jamie Kirkness had 13 points for Shorecrest.

Squalicum 62, Jackson 32 - Sarah Smith scored eight of her 10 points in the first half to help the Storm (2-5) from Bellingham build a 32-18 halftime lead in the nonleague game. Anna Pearson scored 11 for the Timberwolves (2-7).

Arlington 65, at Lakewood 23 - Kayla Burt led three Eagles in double figures with 18 points and hit four three-pointers as Arlington (7-0) reached the title game of the Stilly Valley Shootout at Lakewood High. Megan Toth scored 14 points and Laryn Jones 13 for Arlington. The Eagles will play Stanwood at 7 p.m. today for the championship.

Stanwood 61, Ferndale 31 - The Spartans raced to an 18-3 first-quarter lead and rolled into the championship game of the Stilly Cup Tournament at Lakewood High School. Stanwood (5-2) will play Arlington in the final at 7 p.m. today. Hanni Wenzel had 18 points and 19 rebounds for the Spartans.

Skyline 61, at Thomas Jefferson 53 - Skyline eked out a lead in the last three minutes and sealed the deal at the free-throw line, hitting 19 of 24 in the nonleague game. Tory Mauseth got all of her eight points in the last three minutes for Skyline (5-3). Taylor Benson had 27 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists for the Spartans. Michelle Morse scored 23 points and Linday Key 16 for Thomas Jefferson, of the 4A SPSL.

Auburn Riverside 61, Tahoma 60 - Bethany Rasmussen hit the game-winning basket as the Ravens (3-2 league) won a SPSL North Division game. Riverside hurt Tahoma (1-3, 2-5) at the foul line, where the Ravens made 16 of 23 free throws and the Bears only 5 of 13. Nicole Mazen had 20 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists for Tahoma. Jamie Whitehead scored 13 points, Maria Hidalgo 12 and Jackie Bykonen 11 for the Ravens.

At Kentridge 70, Sumner 58 - Courtney Lacock, a 5-8 sophomore guard, broke a school record with five three-pointers and scored 30 points to lead the Chargers past Sumner in an SPSL North game. Lauren Inaba had 23 points for Kentridge. The Chargers, 0-20 last season, are 2-2 in the league and 4-3 overall. Natasha Rice and Karin Smith each scored 15 points for Sumner (0-4 league).

At Shoreline Christian 51, Seattle Lutheran 41 - Danielle VanHall, a sophomore center, had 15 points and 10 rebounds to help the Crusaders move into the championship game of their own Oak Leaf Classic Tournament. Shoreline Christian (4-1) will play Sunnyside Christian in today's 4 p.m. final. Kate Nuedelman had a career-high 13 points for the Crusaders. Seattle Lutheran's Ilana Torchinova had 17 points and 8 rebounds. Sunnyside Christian pounded Quilcene 96-13 in the first-round.
