Girls Swimming State Championships -- Bellevue Senior Makes Four Events

FEDERAL WAY - Anola Scott-Browne isn't one to carry on about her achievements.

She methodically goes about her business in the water, gliding her way to fast times and individual victories with the goal of helping her team win swim meets.

Scott-Browne, the diminutive Bellevue senior, appears on her way to doing both after a successful preliminary performance at yesterday's state Class 3A/2A swimming and diving championships at the King County Aquatic Center.

Scott-Browne qualified for today's finals in four events, including the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly. The finals start at 5 p.m.

"She came into today's meet pretty relaxed," Bellevue Coach Paul Von Destinon said. "She's where she needs to be for finals."

Scott-Browne, the defending state 100 butterfly champion, faces Pullman's Autumn Sample in the final of that race as well as the 200 IM. Sample, also a senior, had the top time in the medley preliminary heats and the second-best mark in the butterfly. Scott-Browne's league rival, Lauren Hill of Issaquah, turned in the top time in that event. Hill, Sample and Scott-Browne should make the 100 butterfly one of the best races of today's finals.

Notes

-- Sara Platzer of Lakes shattered her meet record in the 50 freestyle(23.58 seconds). It was .22 seconds better than the time she swam in 1997.

-- Hill earned All-America honors (1:04.14) in the 100 breaststroke.

-- Two freshmen topped the list of qualifiers for the 500 freestyle: Maki Moore of Highline and Rikki Covey of Spokane's West Valley. The two also finished 1-2 in the 200 free.

-- Bainbridge set a meet record with a time of 1:49.00 in the 200 medley relay.
