Scouting Reports

EVERGREEN WOLVERINES

Location _ White Center (Highline School District)

Coach _ Jim Fortner, third year (13-5; previously coached at Evergreen for 15 seasons, 1978-92, 65-113 record)

1998 record _ 5-2 league (third), 7-2 overall

Returning starters (2 offense, 4 defense) _ RB/LB Cesar Valencia, 5-7, 180, Sr.; DB/WR/QB Jai Paik, 6-0, 180, Sr.; DB/QB Gene Kim, 5-9, 165, Sr.; OL/DL Matt Sweeney, 5-10, 230, Sr.; DE/RB Chris Vala, 6-0, 210, Sr.; K/RB/DB Jon Hergert, 5-9, 175, So.

Impact newcomers _ RB/LB Keith Scott, 5-10, 175, Sr.; WR/DB Michael Churchill, 6-1, 175, Sr.; RB/LB Gavin Rushing, 5-9, 170, Sr.; WR/DE Viliami Puloka, 6-0, 180, Jr.; OL/DL Viliami Tupou, 6-1, 250, So.; OL/DL Fred Teo, 6-1, 265, So.; OL/DL Chris Sherril, 6-1, 246, Jr.; OL/DL Tony Ballard, 5-5, 190, Jr.; WR/DB Saul Aguirre, 5-6, 150, Sr.; OL/DL Raheem Woods, 6-1, 240, Sr.; QB/DB Patrick Furguson, 5-10, 165, Jr.

Outlook _ Big in size, small in numbers _ that's Evergreen this season. The Wolverines lost 18 seniors to graduation, including do-everything Marcus Malu and veteran QB David Nguyen. Depth could be a problem, but the experience is deceiving, since the backups got a lot of playing time last year and the freshman team went unbeaten. Kim should be stable, but young guys must step up.

HAZEN HIGHLANDERS

Location _ Renton

Coach _ Mike Snow, second year (5-4)

1998 record _ 4-3 league (fourth), 5-4 overall

Returning starters (6 offense, 4 defense) _ QB/DB Tyler Bergan, 5-9, 150, Sr.; WR/DB Joey Cirhan, 6-1, 175, Sr.; OL/LB Travis Bates, 6-2, 200, Sr.; DL/OL David Jahnke, 5-11, 205, Sr.; OL/DL Jimmy Lynch, 6-3, 235, Jr.; RB/LB Marsden Martin, 5-10, 200, Jr.; RB/DB DeSean Harrell, 6-0, 190, Sr.

Impact newcomers _ OL/LB Chris Growden, 5-10, 180, Jr.; OL/LB Ryan O'Dell, 6-0, 170, Jr.; RB/DB Evan Pate, 6-0, 170, Sr.; RB/DB Cole Nicholls, 5-7, 180, Sr.; RB/DB Mike Orille, 5-8, 155, Jr.; RB/DB Beau Arsenault, 5-11, 170, sr.; WR/DB Robell Ghrmai, 5-11, 170, Jr.; OL/DL Babar Ali, 5-10, 170, sr.; QB Matt Dennison, 6-1, 185, Sr.

Outlook _ Snow seeks dramatic improvement on defense, and if he gets it, the Highlanders should make a similar impact on the playoff chase. Bergan finished third in Seamount passing as a junior and looks even sharper now with Cirhan back as his leading receiver. Martin and Harrell were two of the better running backs in the league last season, but the Highlanders aren't real deep after that. Look for less predictability on offense.

HIGHLING PIRATES

Location _ Burien (Highline School District)

Coach _ Bill Anderson, second year (2-7)

1998 record _ 1-6 league (tied for seventh), 2-7 overall

Returning starters (8 offense, 7 defense) _ RB/DB David Crawford, 5-11, 165, Sr.; RB/LB Adrian Smith, 6-1, 210, Jr.; QB Joe Hollis, 6-2, 220, Jr.; OL/DL Chris Chapman, 6-1, 227, Jr.; OL/DL Saul Kanongata'a 5-10, 210, Sr.; TE/DE Ed Kendall, 5-10, 170, Jr.; WR/DB Barrett Livingston, 6-0, 170, Jr.; OL/LB Greg Herrin, 6-0, 225, Jr.; DL/OL Bryan Dill, 6-4, 225, Sr.; DB/WR Nick Frazier, 5-9, 165, Sr.; K/P Ricky Eppler, 5-10, 170, Jr.

Impact newcomers _ OL/DE Jake Taliloa, 6-2, 190, Jr.; OL/LB Charles Rowland, 5-11, 165, Jr.; WR/DB Nathan Chambers, 6-1, 170, Jr.; OL/DL Ryan Anderson, 5-11, 217, So.; QB/DB Brent Wood, 5-9, 155, So.; QB George Kanakaokai, 6-2, 185, Sr.; WR/DB David Simon, 6-0, 170, Sr.; K Brian Cotlov, 5-9, 165, Jr.

Outlook _ Could be league's most improved team. Pirates have nearly 100 players out, including freshmen, more than twice as many as last year, when they relied heavily on underclassmen. Crawford averaged nearly 150 all-purpose yards last year. Hollis was thrown into the fray as a sophomore and should be more productive this year.

KENNEDY LANCERS

Location _ Burien

Coach _ Bob Bourgette, fifth year (36-6)

1998 record _ 9-0 league (first), 10-1 overall, lost 13-12 to Mariner in state quarterfinals

Returning starters (5 offense, 4 defense) _ FB/LB Latrel Williams, 6-0, 205, Sr.; RB/DB David Roline, 5-10, 190, Sr.; DE/OL Joe Burnison, 5-11, 205, Sr.; DL/OL Mike Hatfield, 6-0, 295, Sr.; OL/LB Mike Augustyn, 6-2, 220, Sr.; OL/LB Jake Kauzlarich, 6-1, 220, Sr.

Impact newcomers _ QB/LB John Martin, 5-10, 200, Jr.; RB/DB/P Cory Jones, 6-2, 205, Jr.; WR/DB Aaron Hallmon, 6-0, 170, Jr.; OL/LB Brett Tolmie, 5-9, 205, Jr.; OL/DL Matt Lytle, 6-7, 230, Sr.; RB/LB Junior Bady, 5-9, 205, Jr.; OL/DL Nick Filer, 5-10, 215, Sr.; B/DE Jason Warren, 5-10, 185, Jr.; QB/DB/P Matt Kostecka, 5-7, 160, Jr.; K Aaron Wiseman, 5-9, 190, Sr.; TE/QB/LB T.J. Wise, 6-0, 200, So.; OL/DE Aaron Haskins, 6-5, 230, Sr.; TE/DE Kellan Willis, 6-3, 225, Sr.; OL/DE Ryan Wood, 6-5, 255, Jr.

Outlook _ All-staters Paul Arnold (RB/DB) and Joey Thomas (DB/QB) are at the UW, and several other veterans graduated with them, but Williams leads a solid core of returners. Promising transfers will help the Lancers reload. Look for big things from Jones and Bady. Hatfield is a three-year starter on DL, but others must step up. Martin got some time at QB last year and is an excellent athlete with a rocket arm. This is the team everyone's pointing to once again.

LINDBERGH EAGLES

Location _ Renton

Coach _ Melvin Wells, third (7-11)

1998 record _ 2-5 league (tied for fifth), 2-7 overall

Returning starters (3 offense, 3 defense) _ RB/DE Shawn Dinius, 6-1, 215, Sr.; QB/DB Keven Russell, 6-1, 190, Sr.; OL/DL Todd Leblanc, 6-2, 225, Jr.

Impact newcomers _ TE/LB John Bankson, 5-11, 185, Sr.; RB/DB Mike Hoeksema, 5-9, 170, Sr.; OL/DL Peter Aguilar, 6-0, 200, Sr.; RB/DE Larry Chandler, 6-0, 185, Jr.; OL/LB Matt Cornwell, 5-11, 190, Sr.; OL/DL Marshall Lineberger, 6-2, 295, Sr.; RB/DB Deshawn Cannonier, 5-8, 165, Sr.; OL/DL Justin Diaz, 6-2, 225, Sr.; OL/LB Justin Korda, 6-1, 210, Sr.; WR/DB Ryan Kimball, 5-10, 180, Sr.; K Dhani Meadows, 6-0, 180, Sr.

Outlook _ Dinius can do it all and will help fill void left by graduation of Jessy Hansen. Inconsistent line play hurt the Eagles last year and Wells expects to see big improvement in that area as Leblanc, Aguilar and Cornwall all played a lot. Russell, who missed the last four games of '98 with a jaw injury, needs to have a good year if Eagles expect to be a factor. Receiving corps features a lot of new faces, but shows potential.

MT. RAINIER RAMS

Location _ Des Moines (Highline School District)

Coach _ Brent Kawaguchi, fifth year (15-22).

1998 record _ 1-6 league (tied for seventh), 1-8 overall.

Returning starters (5 offense, 5 defense) _ OL/LB Chris Newell, 6-2, 190, Jr.; OL/DL Adam Keane, 6-3, 230, Sr.; WR/DB Jeff Peritore, 6-1, 165, Jr.; WR/DB Micah Theckston, 6-3, 160, Sr.; DE/TE Jesse Potvin, 6-0, 190, Sr.; OL/DE Jordan Bosheres, 5-11, 170, Jr.; DB/RB Chris Davis, 5-10, 175, Jr.; K John Hollowell, 5-11, 165, Jr.;

Impact newcomers _ QB/DB Aaron Fenton, 5-11, 185, Jr.; DB Chris Wheaton, 5-6, 130, Sr.; OL/DL Garrett Heaton, 6-5, 230, So.

Outlook _ Rams struggled mightily on offense last year, averaging less than 180 yards an outing, and must be more productive if they hope to move up. Peritore proved to be a weapon last year as a sophomore and should be a primary target for Fenton, who got a lot of reps as a backup last year.

RENTON INDIANS

Location _ Renton

Coach _ Mark Stewart, second year (took over after first game of 1998 season; second stint as Renton head coach).

1998 record _ 6-1 league (second), 7-4 overall; lost to eventual champion Capital 14-0 in state quarterfinals.

Returning starters (6 offense, 7 defense) _ OL/DL Ryan Coddington, 6-0, 250, Sr.; OL/DL John Stauch, 6-3, 250, Sr.; OL/DE Ryan Berndt, 6-0, 190, Jr.; TE/LB Jacob Marx, 5-11, 190, Sr.; QB/DB Johnny Johnson, 5-10, 170, Sr.; DB/RB Chris Newbill, 5-11, 180, Sr.; OL/DL Jeff Prescott, 6-1, 230, Sr.; LB/WB Jerry Butler, 5-11, 185, Sr.

Impact newcomers _ RB/LB Mandalian Richardson, 5-9, 185, Sr.; OL/DL Troy Miller, 6-2, 270, Sr.; TE/SE/DB Elijah Davis, 6-2, 180, Jr.; WB/LB Robert Cann, 5-10, 185, Sr.; OL/LB Kris McClaskey, 5-9, 165, So.

Outlook _ Johnson is a top-notch athlete who has worked hard on his passing game (he completed only 6 of 10 tosses in seven league starts last year). The Indians don't have E.J. Ash and LeGary Mitchell to rely on, but _ as usual _ the running back stable is far from empty. Stewart thinks Newbill and Richardson could have big years and Coddington anchors a strong line. It's another small group that should grow after the first couple of weeks.

TYEE TOTEMS

Location _ SeaTac (Highline School District)

Coach _ Pat O'Grady, first year

1998 record _ 2-5 league (tied for fifth), 2-6 overall

Returning starters (5 offense, 5 defense) _ WR/DB Bobby Bernal, 6-2, 210, Sr.; WR/DB Oscar Alvarez, 5-10, 185, Sr.; DB/QB/WR Levi Taxdahl, 5-8, 175, Sr.; LB/RB James Porche, 5-10, 240, Sr.; OL/DL Victor Hammond, 6-2, 285, Jr.; TE/LB Jordan Seiber, 5-10, 200, Jr.; K Brian Sipes, 5-10, 200, Sr.

Impact newcomers _ QB/DE Ryan Tone, 6-3, 225, Sr.; OL/LB Diego Goding, 6-0, 215, So.; WR/DB Allen Wilson, 6-0, 190, Sr.; RB/DB Curtis Deas, 5-8, 165, Jr.; RB/DB Tariq Mahmoud, 5-10, 195, Sr.

Outlook _ Bernal, who led the league in receptions with 32 in seven games, is a real talent and could play at the next level. Alvarez and Taxdahl are quality players, too. Taxdahl, a running back last year, could wind up sharing the quarterbacking duties with Tone. O'Grady's enthusiasm is contagious and the roster should continue to grow.
